Hyattstown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Our spiritual, historic Church filled with loving hearts and open minds, yearning to know God through Christ and for the freedom to love all in community. Rev.

We are Open & Affirming - our pastor is Rev. Yakelin Santos. The "Disciples" are the first denomination founded in the USA based on the guiding principle of Christian Unity. http://disciples.org/ This little church was founded around the same time that this Unity movement was forming and has continuously served the environs since 1830. Hyattstown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is an Open

and Affirming congregation. This means we welcome into the full life and ministry of the church all people, regardless of ability, age, education, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, socioeconomic status, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, or any other distinction. From baptismal and at the communion table, from the nursery cribs to the church leadership, whether you were raised in a church or have never before attended one, you are welcome here. Our Pastor is Rev. Monica Banks. She joined our congregation on September 13, 2020. She came to us after 2 years of active searching and with the stressful conditions of a global pandemic. Banks was raised by Baptist grandparents from the age of ten. She was baptized at the age of 12 and grew up attending youth group at First Baptist Church in Fremont, Nebraska. Banks was also active in church camp and statewide youth events. Before pursuing ministry, she attended business school and pursued a B.S. in Business Leadership and Management. She graduated from College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska in 2002. Banks spent much of her early career in the hospitality industry, was a corporate trainer and general manager at chef-owned and farm to table restaurants. In 2012, Rev. Banks followed her calling to ministry and began the discernment process. She began her theological education at Wake Forest School of Divinity in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2014. During her time at Wake Forest, she traveled on pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine, Tucson/Nogales, and the Patagonia Region of the Southwest working with migrant farmers. In 2017, Rev. Banks was nominated and received the Re:Generate fellowship for young ministers working in ecology and food insecurity. Banks continued to have a gospel centered focus of Table/Hospitality, Eucharistic praxis (practice), and focus toward ultimate kinship. Banks is the founding Co-Executive Director of New Communion (www.newcommunion.org), an interfaith nonprofit focused on Asset Based Community Development and food justice. She is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the North Carolina Commission on Ministry. Reverend Banks has completed a Chaplain Residency at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has served as Second Year Chaplain Resident to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intermediate Unit, and Pediatric Emergency Department. Most recently she was Senior Pastor at New Disciples of Cedar Rapids in Iowa. Banks experience in leadership, business, and initiating programs to help the needy and marginalized align with our church’s New Beginnings transformation initiative. We hope you will come be part of our new ministry as we continue to expand the work of God’s church in support of the community and beyond. Sunday, we had our Little Library dedication ceremony. The event followed the ringing of our church’s bells. We had the honor to have Doug, neighbor and maker of the Library, present. He helped Pastor Santos fill up the Library.
Also, we put some books in it which include books for kids, teens and grownups. This upcoming week, we will also include few DVDs. Then, feel free to take a pick, and you might find something interesting!
In addition, Pastor Santos registered our Little Library to the National record of Little Libraries. We will be receiving a unique number which will identify us with the official credentials. Isn’t that great?

Please join in prayer on Ash Wednesday, February 18th at 8 pm ET

On Ash Wednesday we invite you to join a diverse group of Christian leaders across traditions for a virtual prayer service at 8pm ET on February 18th, to launch A Call to Christians in a Crisis of Faith and Democracy, a bold call to courage in the face of cruelty and growing authoritarianism and the misuse and abuse of our faith.

In a time that calls for moral clarity and action, this gathering offers space to center ourselves, pray for the most vulnerable and our nation’s leaders, and renew our shared commitment to justice.

We hope you will join us and also share this invitation so that thousands of voices and hearts can be present together in this space of repentance and call to courageous action.

Christmas 2025 Pastoral letter from Pastor Santos

Dear brothers, sisters, and all beloved members and friends of Hyattstown Christian Church:

Grace and peace to you!

There is a detail in the Christmas story that only Luke shares: “...and there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night” (Luke 2:8). Nearby what? Nearby whom? The previous verses describe Joseph and Mary—very pregnant—arriving in Bethlehem, only to find there was no place for them to stay.

As the story unfolds, Mary and Joseph find shelter in a humble cave, a space meant to protect animals from the elements. At that crucial moment, it seems there was no one else with them—just the couple, a newborn baby about to enter the world, surrounded by harsh conditions and loneliness. Or so it appears, until we read Luke’s words again: “and there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby.” While Bethlehem slept, its doors closed and no room in the inn, the shepherds were awake, keeping vigil.

Thanks to Luke, we know that these shepherds received a special visit—angels announced the birth, and the shepherds set out to find what the heavenly host proclaimed. And they found what they were looking for! The two who were feeling the distress of their circumstances heard the newborn baby’s cry and welcomed visitors who had never been far, only nearby.

Among many lessons, the Christmas story of the shepherds teaches us that we are never truly alone. God always places “shepherds” nearby to accompany us in our most difficult moments. Somebody else vigils with us! And above all, because of this child—who would grow to be a man—his presence is the eternal Emmanuel. Emmanuel means “God with us,” assuring us that we are never alone.
I hope, pray, and wish you all a wonderful and blessed Christmas.
With faith, hope and love,
Rev. Santos

Love - Fourth Sunday of Advent

12/14/2025

Advent Week 3 invites us into joy—not as a fleeting feeling, but as a deep trust that renewal is possible. Isaiah 35 paints a world where creation rejoices, strength is restored, and those who wander find their way home.

This week, may joy open our eyes to signs of restoration and help us join the Spirit’s work with gentleness, courage, and hope.

This Week’s Invitation: Look for the places where joy is already breaking through.

[Alt Text: Graphic titled ‘Advent Week 3 | Isaiah 35:1–10 – JOY.’ The image includes a reflection about joy rooted in Isaiah’s vision of renewal, a prayer asking the Giver of Joy for strength and grace, and an invitation to look for places where joy is breaking through. Three Advent candles are shown, including one pink candle for Joy Sunday. A rainbow flame illustration with a cross appears in the bottom right corner.]
