We pause as the Disciples must have paused. It had to be so disheartening to see what their Lord and Savior experienced from the night in the Garden of Gethsemane on Maundy Thursday, the trials that night, the pain of confirmation of Christ's words, "You will deny me three times, before the Rooster Crows twice" as Peter said, "I don't know that man." Then the sting of guilt, overburdening grief, and overwhelming tears of sorrow as what Peter's words fears of could he really stand the pressure when the pressure cooker was turned up to full tilt on him. This time, no, next time, and the next times after that he would stand strong, most likely reflecting on this solitary moment when his Lord and Savior needed him the most.
But wait, it all had to happen, the denial, the trials, whippings and scourgings, and the Crucifixion to come. This is why when Christ, with compassion in His eyes, looked across Caiaphas Home into Peter's eyes, Christ was filled with love and conviction. Still with quiet contemplation they think through the hours of Friday, Jesus rising in a cold cell, hearing the crowd call for His Crucifixion. What is even more incredible was the compassion he showed walking to the cross and greater compassion later as Christ looks upon the crowd. One of many phrases still echoing in their minds, "Father Forgive them for they know not what they do."
These words meant for the Crowds, Temple Leadership, and the Roman Soldiers. Thinking about these words, would the Disciples also be thinking about their abandonment from Thursday Night as Jesus was arrested, and all that followed through the night, into the morning. Then the walk to the cross, crucifixion, and finally being laid in a cold tomb. Maybe the Disciples and ourselves think...what have we done. Why did he have to die on the cross for our sins?
Again, it all had to happen. Jesus, a Sacrifice prepared before the foundations of the earth were laid. A plan agreed to, lived out, and honorably completed. So that we could all have an opportunity to accept Him as Lord and Savior, saving our very lives.
Today, be thoughtful of what Christ did, so that tomorrow we can celebrate and sing, He Lives, He's alive forevermore and Christ Reigns!
We Hope to see You All either in person or online at 9:30am for Easter Sunday Worship!
