We remember poet, essayist, farmer, and environmentalist Wendell Berry, whose life and work invited us to consider what it means to belong—to one another, to the land, and to the communities we call home.
Again and again, Berry reminded us that community is more than simply living alongside one another. It is relationship, responsibility, trust, and care.
“A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves.”
—Wendell Berry
As we mark his passing, we give thanks for the words he leaves behind—and for his enduring call to tend the places, relationships, and communities we share.
