Easy & fun service project idea for kids of all ages:
Color cards and write encouraging messages! Send them to area prisoners, nursing facilities, active military, or anyone else you feel led to bless. These will brighten their day (and yours)! ☀️
Jesus said he was sent "to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
The gospel (good news) according to Jesus' disciple Luke, as recorded in the Bible (Luke 4:18-21)
Jews already knew the year to which Jesus referred as the "Jubilee" - a cyclical setting right of all that was wrong in society, which God instructed the Jews to proclaim and celebrate roughly every 50 years. There's a reason we call great joy "jubilation." When you are freed from slavery or a debtors prison after years of suffering for taxes you couldn't pay; your family's land is returned to you; or all your debts are forgiven, that's exactly what you feel.
Jesus was (and is) the ultimate Jubilee. He paid our debts once and for all, and gives us new life -- freedom from our own failures, freedom from others' opinions of us (whether desperatley feared or desperately craved), freedom from sin and punishment and death.
But - as if that wasn't enough - he doesn't let our life look like a "living Hell," either.
He cares about our circumstances, our wellbeing, and our healing NOW, just as scripture shows he always has. Not just once in first century Judea. Not just for some in the political or religious "in crowd" (who owned the land, collected the taxes, ran the courts, and paid the prison guards, by the way). Not just once, someday, after a scripted prayer. Not just every 50 years or in a heaven forever far away.
Jesus cares about you - not anonymously, but by name. He can heal you - not for a price with the letters behind his name, but for free with the letters from his lips.
He is the only one who can set you free. And he wants you to experience great joy. Here. Now. Forever.
Do you?
What does "good news" for others look like to you?
God bless you!
