It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Sister Patrice Ryan, SSJ, who entered eternal life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Clarence Residence, surrounded by her loved ones.

Born in Buffalo on March 20, 1945, to Mathias and Ruth Ryan, Sister Patrice was one of five children. After graduating from Bishop O'Hern High School in 1962, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph and received the veil on July 2, 1963. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Medaille College in 1969 and professed her final vows on July 26, 1970.

For nearly six decades, Sister Patrice faithfully served as an educator, counselor, leader, and advocate for others. She began her teaching ministry at Immaculate Conception School, where she inspired generations of students through her love of Social Studies, history, and learning. She later served as principal and continued her educational ministry at St. Matthew's School and Catholic Academy of West Buffalo. After earning her Master's degree in School Counseling, she dedicated more than two decades to serving students and families as a school counselor.

Sister Patrice also generously shared her gifts of leadership with the Congregation. She served on the Leadership Team as General Councilor and Vice President before being elected President of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo in 2019, a role she faithfully held until her passing.

As President, Sister Patrice guided the Congregation through unprecedented challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and significant transitions within the Community. She remained steadfast in her commitment to the care and well-being of the Sisters, ensuring they received the highest quality healthcare, spiritual support, and compassionate accompaniment.

Beyond her many accomplishments, Sister Patrice will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, dry wit, and wonderful sense of humor. She was deeply devoted to her family, cherished her beloved dog Matisse, and touched countless lives through her compassion and presence.

She was a beloved Sister, colleague, mentor, and friend whose legacy of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Please keep Sister Patrice, her family, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo in your prayers.

May she rest in God's peace.

We honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their unwavering commitment to the common good. Their legacy lives on in the freedoms we cherish and the communities we are called to serve.

In the spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph, we also hold in prayer the families and loved ones who carry the weight of this loss each day. May they be comforted by the love that surrounds them and the enduring gratitude of a nation.

As we gather with family and friends, may we take a quiet moment to remember those who gave everything, and recommit ourselves to lives of peace, unity, and compassion.

With gratitude for a life faithfully lived, we share the peaceful passing of Sister Bette DiCesare at the Clarence Residence on May 18, 2026.

Sister Bette touched countless lives through her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to serving others. Her expertise in the Spanish language led her to a ministry that profoundly impacted refugees seeking safety, dignity, and hope.

In 1984, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) worked together to establish Vive La Casa, serving refugees from Central America. Through networking and collaboration with refugee advocacy and legal defense groups across the United States and Canada, Vive La Casa became a place of refuge and support for those fleeing war and persecution.

When Vive La Casa moved in 1991 from the Center for Justice on Main Street in Buffalo to the former St. Matthew School, it allowed the ministry to welcome and assist even more refugees. Sister Betteโ€™s advocacy and fluency in Spanish were essential in helping refugees attend medical appointments, secure temporary housing, complete work permit documentation, and enroll in English language and other necessary classes.

Through her ministry, Sister Bette impacted the lives of hundreds of refugees from Northern Africa, Central America, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East who were escaping the horrors of war-torn situations. Her life reflected the mission of welcoming the dear neighbor without distinction, and her legacy of compassion and justice will continue to inspire many.

We ask that you keep Sister Bette, her family, friends, and the Sisters of St. Joseph in your prayers.

As we celebrate Laudato Si' Week, we join Catholics around the world in reflecting on our shared responsibility to care for our common home.

Inspired by Pope Francisโ€™ encyclical Laudato si', this week invites us to live more intentionally through prayer, gratitude, simplicity, and care for all creation.

At the Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo, we are reminded that caring for the Earth is deeply connected to caring for one another, especially the most vulnerable among us.

May we continue to foster peace, justice, and love for all creation in our daily lives. ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š

Happy Motherโ€™s Day ๐ŸŒธ
We give thanks for all women who embody the spirit of motherhood, those who have nurtured life, offered guidance, and shared unconditional love in countless ways.

In a special way, we honor the Sisters of St. Joseph, whose lives have been devoted to caring for others with compassion, humility, and grace. Though many are not mothers in the traditional sense, they have been mothers in heart, serving as mentors, teachers, caregivers, and sources of comfort to so many.

Today, we remember and honor all mothers, those who are with us, those who have gone before us, and those who carry the role of โ€œmotherโ€ in their own unique and meaningful ways.

May this day be filled with gratitude, love, and gentle moments of peace.
