This is something that probably should be more publicly known. Not because anyone is seeking recognition. Not because pastors want attention. And certainly not because we believe we have all the answers. But because it is important for our community to know that every first Tuesday of the month, a group of local pastors gather at the invitation of city leadership to join them and pray for our city. We come from different denominations. We worship differently. We do not agree on everything. Yet we stand together as Christians who care deeply about this community and the people who call it home. We pray for our city leaders and elected officials. We pray for city employees who serve behind the scenes. We pray for first responders, teachers, businesses, families, and neighborhoods. We pray for wisdom, strength, guidance, protection, and blessing.
We even pray for those who disagree, oppose or see the world differently. Because prayer is not about choosing sides. It is about seeking God's will and asking for His grace to be present in our community. As we prayed this morning, a simple question came up.

Are you acting the way you believe?

Not just on Sunday. Not just when people are watching. But in your conversations, your social media posts, your workplace, your neighborhood, and your treatment of those who think differently than you.
If we believe in grace, are we showing grace?
If we believe in forgiveness, are we forgiving?
If we believe in love, are we loving?
If we believe Jesus calls us to pray for our neighbors and even our enemies, are we doing that?
This isn't something I share to boast about what pastors are doing. In fact, these prayer meetings happen quietly and before most of the city is up and about.
But I think now even more than ever before it needs to be proclaimed.
In a time when division creates headlines, it is worth knowing that people are still coming together. It is worth knowing that churches are praying together. It is worth knowing that faith leaders are seeking God's wisdom for our city and its future. This group of pastors believe that The Holy Spirit is at work in our city and we believe Claremore is worth praying for.
So today, take a moment to pray for our city. Pray for its leaders. Pray for its people. Pray for those who you agree with and for those you don't and ask yourself.
Am I acting the way I believe

One of the greatest things about community is what happens when people see a need and work together to meet it. An employee at Rogers County Youth Services had a vision to help keep kids (the human kind) busy this summer, learning responsibility and staying connected to something positive. Grace UMC happened to have a field full of grass, weeds, and the greatest natural buffet a kid (the goat kind) could ever imagine. So we came together. Now kids are helping care for kids, and everyone is benefiting. The goats get fresh forage, young people gain meaningful experiences, and our field gets a little more trimmed every day. And then there's Bonnie, our Pyrenees-Lab mix guardian finally getting to do what she was made to do, watching over the herd and keeping everyone safe. Well, mostly. Bonnie still occasionally forgets that the fence is electric and gets a surprise reminder that some lessons take a little longer to learn and hurt sometimes. At Annual Conference last week, we heard about how John Wesley spent his ministry looking for needs and finding ways to meet them. One story that stood out was Wesley's relationship with Thomas Blair, a condemned prisoner whom many people had written off. While others saw a criminal, Wesley saw a child of God. He wasn't afraid to go where others wouldn't go if it meant sharing grace with someone who needed it.
Wesley believed what I believe is still true today, the church is not just for the people who are already here. The church exists for the people who aren't. That requires us to think differently, look beyond our walls, and sometimes do ministry in unexpected places.

Sometimes ministry happens in a sanctuary. Sometimes it happens in a prison cell. Sometimes it happens in a pasture where kids are helping kids and a dog is learning that the fence is electric. God has a way of using all kinds of people, animals, and opportunities to bless a community. We're grateful for our partnership with RCYS and for the reminder that ministry begins when we ask, "What need do we see, and how can we help?" Maybe that's why Wesley was willing to become more vile in the eyes of religious people. He knew that reaching new people means doing new things. And sometimes, apparently, it means turning a church field into a goat buffet.
