For Bible Nerds (like us) Who want to know
The idea of God being king, over all creation, and especially over His people has roots in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 33:5 Ps 99:1-5 Isaiah 6:1-5). But in addition to statements about God‘s present kingship, there are implications for a more robust future kingdom of God (Isaiah 2:21-23; 33:17-22 Zech. 14:1-9). Jesus announced that this future kingdom was breaking into reality (“the kingdom of God is at hand”) through his life and work. Of course, God‘s reign has already begun in the hearts and lives of those with faith in Jesus (Luke 11:20; 17:20; 18:16-17), even though it’s not yet fully consummated and won’t be until Jesus comes again (Luke 13:28-30; 19:11; 21:31; 22:16-18). And so, in our present day and age, scholars refer to this idea as the “already/not yet” kingdom of God.

For Bible nerds (like us) who want to know- Not all disciples were apostles. Disciples of Jesus are people who are devoted to following Him, which means Jesus had crowds of disciples during His ministry, and millions of them since! The apostles were 12 of Jesus’s disciples whom He selected to be leaders among the rest.
At the time of this particular missions trip, many disciples had been with Jesus for some time, and at the sermon on the Mount, he gave 12 of them the role and title of “apostle.” This label comes from the Greek word meaning “one who is sent.” How cool is that? The gospel of Luke records Jesus sending His followers out 2 x 2 on a second short-term missions trip, only this one was for a bigger group of 72 disciples (Luke 10:1-12).
