Bishop’s Friday Blog: LET THAT SINK IN!

I’ve used this common phrase for years not knowing I was quoting Jesus! Often, in my sermons, I advise my audience to “take just a minute and LET THAT SINK IN.” In Luke 9:44 (KJV) Jesus said to his disciples, “Let these sayings SINK DOWN INTO YOUR EARS…”. There it is. Jesus telling us to “LET THAT SINK IN!” Go head, He’ll wait.
Most dictionaries state that the phrase “Let that sink in” represents “a pause for reflection” to take the time to fully process a surprising, shocking, or significant statement. Today, I hope you will take Jesus’ advice to let whatever He tells you to SINK IN. While you are reading your Bible, if He says something that surprises or shocks you?… While you are praying, if He quickens your spirit with anything significant?… While you are surfing Facebook… Pause what you’re doing for a moment of reflection and “LET THAT SINK IN!” This practice will change your life. Amen.

Bishop’s Friday Blog: IN GOD WE TRUST!

The Bible has many mottos (guiding principles). One of these is 1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV, “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

America has many mottos too. By an act of Congress in 1956, three American mottos were declared OFFICIAL NATIONAL MOTTOS. They are:
In God We Trust. First printed on our coins in 1864.
E pluribus unum. Out of many, One. Taken from our Congressional Seal. 1782.
Liberty. Taken from the American Constitution as one of our inalienable rights. Drafted in 1777.

An interesting correlation between the Bible and American Mottos would be: And now, in America, abide these: In God We Trust, E pluribus unum, and Liberty; these 3, but the greatest of these is IN GOD WE TRUST!

Our Trust In God is what makes America great. Amen

Bishop’s Friday Blog: By Him ACTIONS ARE WEIGHED!

Does changing the name of Burger King to BK Cafe change it in any substantial way? Will it make the coffee ACTUALLY taste better? Will it make the burgers and fries ACTUALLY taste different? Will anything be done or made differently? Probably not, but some consumers will think so. Many of us are into name changes, but not substance changes. If the name change doesn’t represent a substantial change, we’re just fooling ourselves (and others, maybe). It doesn’t take magic, or smoke and mirrors to fool some people. Just change your name and say you’re something new. They’ll buy into it.

1 Sam. 2:3 records, “... For the LORD is the God of KNOWLEDGE; And by Him ACTIONS ARE WEIGHED.” So, we can fool some people all the time, and all people sometimes; but we can’t fool God at any time. With God, ACTIONS STILL speak louder than words? With God, ONE ACT IS STILL worth more than a thousand words. With God, He who LIVES righteously IS righteous. With God, she who BEHAVES holy IS holy. With God, what we truly ARE on the inside (holiness) will be reflected on the outside (righteousness ). With God, what we ARE and what we DO are irrevocably linked. With God, someone who truly BELIEVES will always ACT on his beliefs (faith and works walk hand in hand). So, take that and ACT on it.

Bishop’s Friday Blog: ASK ANYWAY!!!
It is obvious that Jesus already knew what blind Bartimaeus wanted (see Mark 10:46-52). But Jesus made him ASK ANYWAY! “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus said “Lord, that I might receive my sight.” And Jesus said unto him, “Go thy way; thy FAITH hath made thee whole.” And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. Jesus made him ASK ANYWAY!

It should be obvious to you that Jesus already knows what you want… what you need… before you ask. But, as an expression and exercise of your FAITH; ASK ANYWAY!

Jesus said to YOU in Matthew 7:7-8 KJV, “ASK, and it shall be given YOU; seek, and YE shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto YOU: For every one that ASKETH RECEIVETH (the “eth” means everyone who ASKS and KEEPS ON ASKING, will RECEIVE and KEEP ON RECEIVING); and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

That means YOU! Like Blind Bartimaeus, Jesus wants you to ASK ANYWAY! Amen.

Bishop's Friday Blog: It's not "WHO?"... It's "YOU!"

Long ago, an excited lady in my church, somewhat breathlessly said to me, "Pastor, the LORD told me someone in our church is supposed to buy new curtains for the Assistant Pastor's house." I said, "Well, if the LORD told YOU, then YOU are the one who's supposed to do it." She "humphed" and walked away disgruntled.

Moses said God's commands for us are not too mysterious for us to understand or too hard for us to do. They are not so high that we must cry, "WHO" can pull that off; nor so far reaching that we say, "WHO" can make that happen? Instead, Moses said, God put the command in YOUR mouth and in YOUR heart so that YOU can do it. (Deut. 30:11-14). It's not "WHO?"... It's "YOU!"

Bishop’s Friday Blog: a GOD BLESSED INCOME AND SAVINGS!
A coded promise to us is recorded in Deuteronomy 28:5 KJV, “BLESSED shall be thy BASKET and thy STORE.” Historically, the basket was a container for carrying your fresh fruit into the house (Income). The store was the pantry or breadboard where you saved the leftovers for later (Savings). This was a huge promise of prosperity for the Jews coming out of the barren wilderness into the Promised Land.

But what does this promise of prosperity mean for us today? Well, if you’re country folk, the Basket could mean your Garden, and the Store could mean your Pantry or Root Cellar. But what if you’re a city dweller and live in a small apartment with no room for a Window Box, much less a garden or root cellar? I suppose the Basket could mean your grocery bag, and the Store your leftovers in the fridge; but I think the meaning is much bigger and more universal than that. The Basket represents your job, or better yet, all your INCOME. The Store represents where you SAVE your income over budget (Abundance). Either a bank or maybe a jar buried in your back yard. I say PTL and thank You Jesus for GOD BLESSING OUR INCOME AND OUR SAVINGS.

This may be a bigger promise than you think. According to Gallup, 70% of Americans are dissatisfied with their take home pay. So, God blessing our INCOME is huge for most of us. According to CNBC, 71% of Americans have a savings account, but 56% of them have less than $5000, and 33% have less than $1000. Only 18% use high yield savings accounts. According to Econofact, 78% of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck and only 2 weeks away from bankruptcy. 60% of Americans feel financially insecure. So, God blessing our SAVINGS is huge too. Again, “Thank You Jesus!” for this promise to BLESS OUR INCOME AND OUR SAVINGS! PTL and Amen

Bishop’s Friday Blog: HEAVEN ON EARTH!

Is Heaven on earth possible?” YES! Including right now? YES! How do I know? GOD SAID SO! He promised the possibility of Heaven on earth to the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 11:21 KJV, “That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of HEAVEN upON the EARTH.”

The prophetic promise of Heaven literally coming down to earth is found throughout the Bible. But this promise is different. God is promising us the possibility of something LIKE Heaven on earth in our lifetime. Wow! That’s wonderful!

There are 2 conditions for this particular promise:
#1 Faithful Obedience. Heaven on earth is part of a process where we walk with God according to His will, enjoy His favor, and things just get better and better.
#2 Patience. Because it’s part of a process we must learn to patiently wait for it. Blessings follow blessings. Curses are removed and forgotten. Favor banishes frustration. Strength abolishes weakness. Happiness swallows up hurts. Life gets better. Wait for it! It’s coming.

Heaven on earth? With God all things are possible

Bishop’s Friday Blog: Jesus Practiced what He Prayed.

Included in the Lord’s Prayer is a prayer that never fails. It is: Heavenly Father, THY WILL BE DONE.

Jesus prayed 2 times in the Garden of Gethsemane, and He ended both prayers with a version of the prayer that never fails. That is: THY WILL BE DONE! There is some difference in the language, but the meaning is precisely the same.

Matthew 26:39 KJV, And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless NOT AS I WILL, BUT AS THOU WILT.

Matthew 26:42 KJV
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, THY WILL BE DONE.

Jesus practiced what He prayed. Go and do likewise. Amen.

Bishop’s Friday Blog: WHAT WAS JESUS’ FAVORITE SONG?

Matthew 26:30 KJV, “And when they had SUNG A HYMN, they went out into the mount of Olives.”

What was Jesus’ favorite song? Did He hum it while He walked by the way? Did He whistle it while He worked? In Jesus’ day the Jewish church had a kind of chorus book, or hymnal called the HALLEL. Hallel loosely translates into SONGS OF PRAISE! Does that ring a bell with any Pentecostals out there? You still might find one of these hymnals on the back of a pew or stacking chair in the sanctuary.

The Hallel was based on Psalms 113 to 118. Through the centuries this 6 Psalm collection continues to be the inspiration for endless hymns and worship songs. Reviewing the collection today brought to my mind: “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let all God’s children praise the Lord!”; “Blessed be the name of the Lord. He is worthy to be praise and adored.”; “I would not be denied.”; “For the Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever.”; just to name a few.

If Jesus visited you during your devotion today, what song would He choose to sing? Would you sing along? I would! Amen.

The Future You Hope For!

Eugene H. Peterson, in The Message, gives a different slant to an old familiar verse. He quotes God as saying in Jer. 29:11, "I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out - plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you THE FUTURE YOU HOPE FOR."

What a wonderful thought that God's plan for your future is to give you the future you're hoping for. His plan is to make your dreams come true. This is perfectly consistent with the wonderful God we've come to know and love.

And, here is a follow up thought. Since God is able to make all our dreams come true, shouldn't we dream dreams that are worthy of Him? Shouldn't the future we hope for be worthy of the love and favor Jesus shows us every day? Come on beloved, let's set our sights a little higher! Jesus is!

Bishop’s Friday Blog: BUSINESS BRILLIANCE!

In Lev. 25 God imposed the law of JUBILEE on Israel. It was A STROKE OF BUSINESS GENIUS! Every 50 years, property inherited by a family in the Promised Land, if sold for any reason, was to be restored. This was BALANCED CAPITALISM. It was not Communism, or Socialism, or the unchecked Capitalism in the world today, where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class gets smaller and smaller. JUBILEE was designed by God to sustain wealth for all.

Here’s how GOD’S BRILLIANCE worked. If a naive young man inherited property that he could not manage, and it was falling in value, he could sell it to a competent business man to manage it. But, he could only sell it for its present reduced value, nothing more or less. For instance, if the property under his poor management produced only 20 bushels a year at $10 a bushel, that’s all he could sell it for (times the years remaining until Jubilee. The formula might be 20 bushels @$10 x 20 years.) He could NOT cheat the buyer.

BUT, neither could the buyer cheat him! For instance: he was allowed to LIVE on the property with his family (he could not be evicted), WORK for the competent business man at full wage (no usury or price gouging), and LEARN the trade! Let’s say in 10 years, the property was now worth 40 bushels p. Yr. @ $20 p. bushel (double value), he could buy the property back, but only at the NEW FULL VALUE. Neither the Seller nor the Buyer could be cheated! If the young man couldn’t afford to buy it back, he could wait till the JUBILEE, where he would redeem the property FOR FREE at its NEW FULL VALUE, including all the improvements, plus the knowledge of how to operate and manage the property with sustained prosperity. BRILLIANT! Everyone wins and no one loses. No swindling or cheating allowed. Holy Capitalism!

How foolish we are to adopt the world’s paradigms for making money when no one is as BRILLIANT IN BUSINESS as God Himself. No swindling or cheating allowed. Wealth for all. Think about that. Amen.
