All the epic formations flying over have us thinking back to one of our favorites, the Freedom Formation over Miami! 🇺🇸

John Roach was born in 1925 in Boston, MA and his entire childhood was filled with learning and athletics. When he heard the Army Air Corps opened a program for Black aviators, he immediately jumped at the chance. Unfortunately, no matter where he attempted to take the pilot's application test in the city, he was refused. Finally, one recruiter relented and Roach passed with flying colors.

He became one of the first Black pilots specifically trained on B-25 bombers and, by the time he was done with training, the war was winding down. Opportunities were even more limited in the civilian sector once he left the military, so he went on to study a degree in aeronautical engineering. He returned to the Air Force during Korea and Vietnam, this time flying fighter jets. Like Gen. Charles McGee, his favorite aircraft was always the P-51 Mustang. He retired in 1969 as a full bird colonel.

His career after military service continued in aviation, where he made strides against racism, working in the FAA where he retired in 1983.

Today we remember Col. Roach's service to this country.

Check out this intense photo of Lt. Col. Bertram W. Wilson. The grit and determination in his eyes cannot be ignored. There are so many of these shots of the that reveal the tenacity of these men and women.

Wilson openly shared his experiences during World War II with his grandson, Cheo Hodari Coker, as he was growing up. Coker said of him, “He taught me, in very frank terms, to not let anything get in my way...He would also talk about how they had instructors that would literally try to wash them out, the psychological games that they would play by constantly referring to them with the ‘N’ word. And how a lot of people couldn’t take it."

Wilson's lessons for his grandson are valuable reminders of, not just the tough history this nation has with systemic racism, but- more importantly- the men and women who have fought so hard for equity and justice.

in 1944, 1Lt Roger Romine was killed in service to this country. Roger was departing from Ramitelli Air Base on a mission when his plane suddenly encountered a flock of sheep on the runway, resulting in the plane rolling off the runway, into the mud. Before he could maneuver the plane from its position, the next pilot in take-off mode, encountered the same sheep situation, lost control of his aircraft, and crashed into Roger, killing him.

Ramitelli was situated in an area that relied on sheep and goats for their livelihood. As anyone in aviation knows, animals are a consistent threat to pilots and their crews, especially bird strikes.

A reminder of the many hazards the faced, we remember 1Lt Roger Romine on this day.

CIVIL AIR PATROL WORSHIP WEEKEND 2024. The Chief of Chaplains for the Civil Air Patrol, Chaplain, Colonel John F. Reutemann III, invites all members of the Civil Air Patrol to celebrate the founding of CAP at their personal places of worship and spiritual community this December.

Since 1972 when the CAP Board of Governors first declared a "CAP Sunday" to help recognize the birthday of the organization, Civil Air Patrol has celebrated the importance of personal faith, spiritual resilience, and hope as a critical part of the CAP experience. This year, during the weekend of December 6 to 8, 2024, every adult and cadet member is authorized to wear the Air Force-style service or blue shirt combination, or the corporate equivalents, to their personal faith's worship events. If possible, please share information about this announcement with all the units and members that you have a relationship within CAP.

As always, the entire corps is grateful for each and every member who has committed themselves to a life of integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect through their CAP activities. Thank you for supporting CAP's missions in your community.

Please share pictures of your support with the hashtag .
