St. Gertrude Church - Cincinnati

St. Gertrude Church - Cincinnati We are a Roman Catholic parish shaped and enlivened by the charism of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans).

We teach and preach the Truth, reverently celebrate the liturgy and sacraments, and gather as a community so that all may encounter Jesus here.

The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

We cannot refuse to give our hearts away, nor can we harden our hearts in preemptive defense. Both choices are self-defeating and leave us without the vitality we set out to protect. There is only one path forward—to give our hearts generously to men and women who we know will not take care of them, and to bear the wounds that inevitably follow.

In this very action we are made like Christ—for what is the essence of the Sacred Heart except to be pierced by those He loved, and loved until the end? Bleeding and wounded with swords wielded by those whom we love with Christ’s love, to whom we have not hardened our hearts nor refused the gift of ourselves, our hearts become like unto His.

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, O.P. Frassati had a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist and Blessed Mother. At the age of 17, he joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He dedicated his time to serving the poor and needy, orphans, and assisting demobilized servicemen during World War I. He joined the Lay Dominicans (Third Order of St. Dominic) in 1922. An avid mountain climber, the phrase “verso l’alto” (Italian for “towards the top”) is often attributed to St. Pier Giorgio, who wrote the phrase on the back of one of his climbing photos. It symbolizes a constant striving towards eternal life.

He is the patron saint of the St. Gertrude Parish youth ministry program. Check out one of their upcoming summer events. St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!

Meet the Roberts family-Daniel, Lindsey, Adalie, Hope, and Stephen! The Roberts family first visited St. Gertrude Parish in June 2023. They were living in Charlotte, NC at the time and prayerfully discerning whether to become Catholic. During their visit, they participated in the parish’s Corpus Christi procession which made a lasting impact on their family. They moved to Ohio a few months later and were confirmed on December 31, 2023, the feast of the Holy Family. They credit St. Thomas Aquinas as the saint most responsible for their conversion.

You can read more about them on page 9 at bit.ly/Roberts-Family or listen to their interview on the St. Gertrude Parish podcast (which Daniel hosts). Lindsey also designs custom saint-inspired mugs at saintsandthinkers.com. Give her a follow!

Today we pray for the brave men and women who died in service to our country.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Happy feast of Pentecost!

"Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim." (Acts 2:3-4)
