CELEBRATING LABOR DAY

Labor Day has its roots in the labor unions. We take our eight-hour workday, good work conditions, breaks, and minimum wage for granted today. But it wasn’t always this way. Many in the working class, especially those in factories, were often required to work long hours in terrible conditions for very little pay and often at shockingly young ages. Since factory workers were not skilled laborers and were easily replaced, it was hard to complain about conditions without being dismissed. Labor unions eventually were formed to help abolish these poor working practices and to demand the working class be treated fairly.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Jesus said to his disciples: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

Twenty-five years after his death, the witness of Fr. Jim Willig continues to inspire. 🙏 A beloved priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Fr. Jim spent his final years surrendering more deeply to the Lord and seeking to love God, help others love God and love others more. His legacy continues through his family, his ministry with Heart to Heart, and through his nephews, Fr. Jacob Willig and Fr. Michael Willig, who are now serving as priests of the Archdiocese.

As Fr. Jim prayed throughout his battle with cancer: “Take, Lord, receive all I have and call my own. THE GARDEN OF EDEN

The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made grow every tree that was delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
