It takes a delightfully long time to leave my parents’ house in Wisconsin. It’s more than just the Tetris-style packing of the car for the trip back to Ohio. It’s the multiple hugs that are necessary to make the goodbye feel complete. It’s my mom wondering if we want to take along the juice boxes and the cereal and the chips and the leftover breakfast casserole with us. It’s all the love and prayers and blessings that get sent along with us along the road. How would we ever get back safely without them?

As we leave worship each Sunday, we are headed back out to a world that can feel very lonely and chaotic. We get back in our cars and once more consider the realities of our jobs that often feel unsatisfying, the bodies that often betray us with the aches and illnesses that spring up seemingly out of nowhere, the minds that can be our own worst enemies in terms of poor choices, the sinful nature living in each of us looking to sabotage every relationship we have, including our relationship with God. How will we ever get back safely?

Consider the blessing at the close of worship. Most of the time it’s from Numbers 6. Sometimes it’s from our 2 Corinthians 13 lesson today. We should pay attention to what is being sent with us from the front of church. Our cars are packed with a Father’s care that extends to every area of our lives. We are sent with not just well wishes but the grace that comes only from the Son’s sacrifice. We may travel to our separate homes but we go to them connected by the Spirit through the faith he has worked in our hearts.

Don’t miss that final blessing today. Leave the church building with the knowledge that the triune God goes with you on your way.

Our 5th-8th grade play this year was entitled "The Golden Goose," and the cast did such a tremendous job! It was funny, well-performed, and it was clear the students worked hard on it! God has given so many different abilities to the students in our school, and we rejoice to see them used in a variety of ways. Thank you to Ms. Angie Nelson, Mrs. Rachel Wilch, and Mrs. Cassie Rodriguez for the many hours they spent preparing the group for their performance! Also special thank you to Rachel Wilch for all these fantastic pictures we have been able to share over the last few weeks!

What a blessing to see a room full of young Sunday School teachers at our orientation meeting last night! Three of this year’s confirmands will be using their God-given gifts in the classroom this summer as they teach kids about Christ. Thanks to Mrs. Angie Gumm and Mrs. Carrie Groth for providing some practical teaching instruction to this next generation of educators! May the Lord of the Church bless their work.

Our 5th-8th grade students had a chance on Showcase Night to demonstrate some of the skills or knowledge they had gained over the course of this school year. It was wonderful to see both these young people use their God-given gifts and to see the encouragement of the many adults who showed up to the event!

This past Sunday we had the opportunity to thank God for Mrs. Sue Taylor's 40 years in public ministry! It was a wonderful day to consider how God, gathers us around the Word and sacraments in Christ, grants His people spiritual gifts, motivates them to serve, and then blesses them with the opportunities to use those gifts in ways that are meaningful to Him. As part of the celebration, our faculty made this video to celebrate Sue. It's a real rollercoaster, so buckle up! We love you, Sue!

A little boy finishes tying his own shoes for the first time and stares up at his teacher with surprise and joy. He didn’t think he could do it. A little girl proudly recites the account of Job in front of the whole school. Her teacher has taught her very well. The choir sounds magnificent as they put a spotlight on Jesus, and a tear of joy slides silently down the face of someone sitting in the congregation. The organ thunders out “Thy Strong Word,” and the congregation responds with gusto. A woman sits in the narthex, looking like she could use a hug, and another woman comes over to deliver it warmly. These are all moments from the 40 years of Sue Taylor’s ministry we get to celebrate today. We thank God for all the times He gave Mrs. Taylor a chance to serve Him by serving others both inside and outside the classroom.

It’s fitting that we’re celebrating this anniversary on Pentecost, because we’ll be focusing on the gifts the Holy Spirit gives to members of the church. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul offers a list of these gifts that are to used “for the common good.” The big struggles in Corinth about these gifts involved pride and jealousy. People were seeing these gifts through an inverted lens. Instead of recognizing how God gave them these gifts with others in mind, the Corinthians were only thinking about what those gifts might bring to them. Things like glory and self-satisfaction.

Part of what makes Sue Taylor such a solid worker in God’s kingdom is that she was probably blushing by the time she finished reading that first paragraph. She wants the focus on God, and she’s right. We’ll talk a lot about God today, about His grace and His plan for working through the church. Sue Taylor isn’t perfect, and she knows it, which is another reason we are thankful for her. Her humility that comes from God’s Word has been passed on to 40 years of students, along with countless references to Jesus’ love at the cross and his power in the empty tomb. Of all the reasons to thank God for today, at the top of the list is the number of students who sat in Sue Taylor’s classroom and will one day sit next to her in heavenly glory.

Today we have pictures of our 1st-4th grade play called "Go Fish." The students and their teachers did a great job! Critics called it "fin-tastic" and "sand-sational!" Don't forget we have our celebration of Sue Taylor's 40 years of ministry tomorrow!

The end of the school year was full of students using their God-given talents! Over the next few days, we'll post pictures from the various plays and showcases we had the privilege of seeing. First up is our preschool/kindergarten music showcase and graduation. We are thankful to God for these little lambs and their energy! May Jesus watch over them and bless them all!

It's that time of the year when young people are graduating or preparing to leave one stage of their education for another. Last night our congregation was assigned Noah Cook as our vicar for the 2026-2027 school year. We thank God for the blessing of working with Noah and his wife Hannah later this summer!

On Tuesday night, we formally recognized the 8th grade graduates from our Lutheran Elementary School. Principal Gumm shared some encouraging thoughts from 2 Peter 3:18, which gave us our school year theme: "Grow in Grace." Pastor Groth offered a devotion on the class verse, which is 1 John 4:19 - "We love because he first loved us.!" We pray for all these young people as they enter the next phase of their lives in God's grace!

As the school year winds down, we are feeling extremely grateful and have many reasons to celebrate. A handful of students were presented with “Academic Achievement" or “GRIT” student-of-the-month awards. Our 5th-6th graders were presented with a 1st place plaque for winning their division in the MLC meet math competition; beyond that, five students were individually recognized for their high scores in that competition (two of which had perfect scores on all tests). The upper grades recently enjoyed a pizza party and ice cream party as a reward for absolutely CRUSHING their MAP tests by showing tremendous growth. Both PLTW programs (“Launch” for lower grades and “Gateway” for upper grades) have received the PLTW Distinguished School recognition for 2025-26. And students have been able to share some appreciation and love with a number of people whose work often goes unnoticed, but has a direct positive impact to our ministry…our janitor, Rosy, is one of them. God is good!
