It takes a delightfully long time to leave my parents’ house in Wisconsin. It’s more than just the Tetris-style packing of the car for the trip back to Ohio. It’s the multiple hugs that are necessary to make the goodbye feel complete. It’s my mom wondering if we want to take along the juice boxes and the cereal and the chips and the leftover breakfast casserole with us. It’s all the love and prayers and blessings that get sent along with us along the road. How would we ever get back safely without them?
As we leave worship each Sunday, we are headed back out to a world that can feel very lonely and chaotic. We get back in our cars and once more consider the realities of our jobs that often feel unsatisfying, the bodies that often betray us with the aches and illnesses that spring up seemingly out of nowhere, the minds that can be our own worst enemies in terms of poor choices, the sinful nature living in each of us looking to sabotage every relationship we have, including our relationship with God. How will we ever get back safely?
Consider the blessing at the close of worship. Most of the time it’s from Numbers 6. Sometimes it’s from our 2 Corinthians 13 lesson today. We should pay attention to what is being sent with us from the front of church. Our cars are packed with a Father’s care that extends to every area of our lives. We are sent with not just well wishes but the grace that comes only from the Son’s sacrifice. We may travel to our separate homes but we go to them connected by the Spirit through the faith he has worked in our hearts.
Don’t miss that final blessing today. Leave the church building with the knowledge that the triune God goes with you on your way.
