Timely item from our April Bucket List: Visit the National Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua in Mt Airy! Why is it timely" Because today is his feast day and that means a big day for the Shrine. If you'r can't make for afternoon novena prayers) you can still make the Feast Day Mass this evening.

Recommended by: “Telegraph” staff. Every Tuesday, the hilltop shrine in Mt. Airy offers novena prayers to St. Anthony of Padua at 2:30 p.m. and a Novena Mass at 7 p.m. The large, wooded campus is also home to a Franciscan friary and an outdoor shrine and prayer areas. The chapel offers daily and weekend Masses. Visitors can venerate a first-class relic of St. Anthony and see a scrolling feed of prayers to the saint sent from around the world displayed on a digital screen. Nine weeks before the saint’s feast day, a solemn novena begins and many people commit to coming to the shrine weekly. Hundreds attend the Feast of St. Anthony on June 13, for a gala Mass that features the distribution of “St. Anthony Bread.”

From our June issue: Visit St. Charles Center in Carthagena

Recommended by former Dayton resident Josh Danis, now national director of Alpha USA for Catholics: “It’s beautiful!” This former seminary of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood (CPPS) has been converted to a senior living community, while still serving as the Congregation’s motherhouse. Its Romanesque-style Assumption Chapel was built in 1905 and renovated in 1961. Its altar, gold mosaic and historic Holtkamp organ are popular with visitors, as is the Missionaries’ Heritage Room mini museum in the Gothic Revival-style main building, which houses artifacts from the countries where the Missionaries serve. The 500-acre site includes a farm and tree preserve, a cemetery, and two lakes.

The chapel is open to the public from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., except during special events, and hosts daily Mass. Call to check for a conflict, or to schedule a tour. (2860 U.S. Rte. 127, Celina, Ohio 45822; (419) 925-4516; St-charles-cpps.org; Saintcharlesseniorliving.com) (courtesy photo)

From our current issue, taking place SATURDAY: Corpus Christi procession at Emmanuel Church in Dayton:

Recommended by St, Albert the Great (Kettering) parishioner Gloria Falcao Dodd, at the International Marian Research Institute: “It’s a wonderful procession with the street decorated with colored wood chips.” Dayton’s oldest parish, founded in 1837, celebrates the Old-World tradition of making outdoor “carpets” from dyed wood chips. Common in Italy, Spain, and Latin America, this tradition is rare in our region. Parishioners spend all day Saturday setting up geometric and figurative patterns on the street around the church, then gather for an evening Eucharistic procession over the carpeted ground.

The Feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Processions are held in more than a dozen area parishes between Thursday (the calendar date of the feast) and Sunday. The 17th annual Corpus Christi procession at Emmanuel Church will follow 5:15 Mass on June 2. (149 Franklin St., Dayton, Ohio 45402; (937) 228-2013;

From this month's issue -- Memorial Day Mass at St. Philomela (Stonelick Township). Recommended by Julie Scott, a parishioner at St. Thomas More in Withamsville: “Mass is next to the cemetery – the sun rises and shines through the trees, and after Mass there is a brief gun and flag salute. It’s a lovely event, like going back in time.” The annual Mass at Clermont County’s oldest Catholic Church has been held as long as anyone remembers. A spokesperson for the parish said the “Mass in the Grass” is held at 8:30 on the morning of Memorial Day. The local American Legion post decorates the graves of veterans and, after the Mass, makes a brief presentation and salute. “Bring lawn chairs,” she said, “and there’s a potluck breakfast too – all are welcome.” Memorial Day Mass on the Grass: 8:30 a.m. at the cemetery next to the church, Stonelick-Williams Corner Rd., Stonelick Township, 45103. (513) 732-2218; website: Stlparish.org. In case of rain the Mass will be held in the church, the salute will remain at the cemetery, if possible. (Courtesy photo)

From our current issue: Take a Pilgrimage of Faith hike. Recommended by Lorrie McNickle, a parishioner at St. Ann, Groesbeck: “I think it would be an awesome group outing, but they don’t seem to be very well known.” Prepared for area Boy Scout troops by John Kennedy, the eight existing trails (more are planned) range from five to 15 miles and help groups or individual walkers turn hikes into pilgrimages by stopping to pray at area churches. No fees or permissions are required. Downloadable maps and trail guides for each hike, a prayer book, and pilgrimage suggestions are available at the Pilgrimage of Faith website, Pilgrimageoffaith.org (section of one map shown).

From our February issue: Worship with Eastern Catholics at their Divine Liturgy. Recommended by: Julie Ernst, a parishioner at St. Helen in Dayton. “Learn more about the Eastern Catholic rites by attending a Maronite, Byzantine, or Syro-Malabar Divine Liturgy. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about different cultures!” More than 20 Eastern Catholic Churches have their own ancient liturgies but are in full communion with Rome. Our Eastern Catholic parishes include St. Barbara Parish in Dayton (Byzantine), Maronite parishes St. Anthony of Padua in Cincinnati and St. Ignatius of Antioch in Dayton, and the Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission that worships at Our Lady of the Rosary. Syro-Malabar Catholics are based in Karala, India, and trace their founding to St. Thomas the Apostle. Worship with them at Our Lady of the Rosary, 17 Farragut Road, Greenhills, 45218. Wintonwyomingpr.org. A priest in residence at Xavier University celebrates Qurbana (Mass/Divine Liturgy) in Malayalam and English at 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information about their community, visit Stchavaracincinnati.org.

From this month's Bucket List -- See our priests be ordained. Recommended by: St. Joseph, North Bend, parishioner Tina Geers: “It will change the way you see your pastor, your vicar, or any other ordained clergy that you encounter.” Parts of the ordination Mass come from the earliest days of the church. The new priests famously prostrate themselves before the altar and promise to obey the archbishop, before concelebrating Mass for the first time with the archbishop.
The joyous Mass is accompanied by the cathedral choir and always crowded with friends and family; it’s best to arrive early to find a seat. Another little-known tradition: After greeting the seminarians following Mass, the new priests head to the cathedral undercroft for a reception with family well-wishers, where they give “first blessings” to all who ask for them. Ordination Mass: 11 a.m., May 19, Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains. 325 W. 8th Street, Cincinnati, 45202. (513) 421-5354; website: Stpeterinchainscathedral.org. (CT photo/Greg Hartman)
