The Catholic Social Action Office and Commission seek to empower Catholics in the Archdiocese to celebrate and realize the Gospel call for life, human dignity, and care for God’s creation through Catholic Social Teaching formation, organized social ministries, and opportunities for public advocacy and action. We have organized ministries for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Re

lief Services, and Catholic Rural Life Conference as well as for such current issues as respect life, immigration, care for God’s creation, poverty, international peace, and more. The office also coordinates and provides staff support to regional justice collaborative networks of parishes and other Catholic organizations: the Cincinnati-area Advocates for Justice Parish Collaborative, Dayton-area Weavers of Justice, and the Northern-area Fields of Justice.

Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length. Yet Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. He hopes that we will stop looking for those personal or communal niches which shelter us from the maelstrom of human misfortune and instead enter into the reality of other people’s lives and know the power of tenderness; whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully complicated and we experience intensely what it is to be a people, to be part of a people. ~Pope Francis

On Sunday, May 17th, the staff of the Catholic Social Action Office (CSA) Archdiocese of Cincinnati visited St. Columban in Loveland to recognize Chris Schell's long-term support of our CSA's mission. Andrew Musgrave, Director of CSA, presented her with a token of appreciation.

The hospitality and enthusiastic response of the faith community were phenomenal. Thanks to St. Columban's pastor, Fr. Ed Smith and Chris' husband Chuck for facilitating this surprise presentation.

Thanks to Carrie (Chris' daughter) for the photos!

We would like to highlight this video made by the Brueggeman Center at Xavier University. We are so blessed to witness the energy and enthusiasm from Bellarmine Chapel and St. Xavier Church's Healthy Earth Team for their Pilgrimage of Hope for Creation last year! It was an inspiring event and we hope that it encourages others to engage their communities as we work towards a more beautiful and hopeful future.

Pilgrimage of Hope for Creation: Cincinnati Jesuit Works 2025

04/22/2026

In honor of Earth Day, we invite everyone to join us in prayer for all of God's beautiful creation.

A Prayer for Justice & Care for Our Common Home

God of justice, compassion, and love,
We come before you carrying adoration for this Earth and sorrow for the harm it endures. We see how environmental injustice is deeply connected to other struggles. Communities already burdened by poverty, racism, and displacement are the same communities facing polluted air, unsafe water, and rising climate disasters.
Give us the courage to confront these injustices, to immerse ourselves intentionally, and to listen to those most impacted. Help us advocate for policies and practices that honor both people and the planet. Strengthen our commitment to care for one another in ways that are sustainable, equitable, and rooted in love.
We pray for a world where no one is forced to choose between their health and their survival, where all people have access to clean air, water, healthcare, and the resources they need to thrive. May future generations inherit a world that reflects equity, healing, and hope.
Guide us to be active participants in this work, not just witnesses.
Let our faith call us to action and our actions reflect your love.

Amen.
