The Catholic Social Action Office and Commission seek to empower Catholics in the Archdiocese to celebrate and realize the Gospel call for life, human dignity, and care for God’s creation through Catholic Social Teaching formation, organized social ministries, and opportunities for public advocacy and action. We have organized ministries for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Re

lief Services, and Catholic Rural Life Conference as well as for such current issues as respect life, immigration, care for God’s creation, poverty, international peace, and more. The office also coordinates and provides staff support to regional justice collaborative networks of parishes and other Catholic organizations: the Cincinnati-area Advocates for Justice Parish Collaborative, Dayton-area Weavers of Justice, and the Northern-area Fields of Justice.

Following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia, Catholic Relief Services is supporting Caritas Colombia and its nationwide diocesan and parish network as they respond to widespread damage across multiple communities. Many families are in urgent need of shelter, clean water, food, medical care, protection and other essential support. Our prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods, and with the communities facing uncertainty in the hours and days ahead.

Today is World Refugee Day, an opportunity to recognize the God-given dignity, courage, and resilience of refugees and to renew our commitment to walk with them in hope. As Pope Leo XIV reminds us in Magnifica Humanitas, "A litmus test for social justice today is the treatment of migrants, refugees and those forced to move due to poverty, violence, climate change and environmental disasters. The way a society treats them reveals whether its sense of justice is driven by fear or by the spirit of fraternity.”

Under U.S. and international law, a refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, or a well-founded fear of persecution, based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

The Catholic community in the United States has long served refugees and advocated on their behalf as a way of living out Christ’s call to welcome the stranger and affirming the sanctity of every human life. With global displacement higher today than any other time in recorded history, including through a steady rise in religious persecution, this commitment remains more important than ever before.
