What does wisdom actually promise? And what can't it deliver?

We're kicking off a new series through Ecclesiastes this week, and the Teacher has some clarifying things to say about the limits of human wisdom and what those limits are pointing toward.

Introducing our Summer Preaching Series - The Fullness of Wisdom: Meaning, Love, & Life. Over 12 weeks, we'll study Ecclesiastes & Song of Solomon, considering how God's Word frees us to resist "Christian life hacks," makes space for our disapointment, confusion, and longing, and helps us see how love and wisdom go hand in hand.

Yesterday we celebrated the Day of Pentecost with five baptisms and, as always, the word and the table.

Here is an excerpt from the sermon from Acts 2 and Joel 2. The question Pentecost leaves us with is not whether the Spirit has been given. The question is whether we are living as people who believe it. Whether we are a community that looks for the Spirit's work in the people we'd least expect, in the voices we haven't thought to amplify, in the gifts we haven't thought to ask for.

This Sunday, we'll celebrate Pentecost with 5 baptisms!

In the Anglican Church, the baptistry is placed in the BACK of the sanctuary. This is because baptism is the rite by which we spiritually join the church and begin our journey of life back to God in Christ. The communion table is set at the FRONT of the sanctuary as a reminder of our future and destiny in Christ: sharing a great feast at the wedding supper of the Lamb in the new heavens and new Earth. Each Sunday, the congregation sits BETWEEN the baptistry and the table reminding us that we are in the midst of our journey. We remain a people on the way, empowered by God's Spirit for the mission and ministry to which He's called us.

When we baptize an infant or a child in the Anglican tradition, we all make a promise as the church to raise this child in the faith until the day when he or she can profess their own personal faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord. Thus, baptism isn't something we watch God do in the life of one person. In baptism we all participate in God's grace at work to knit our church together and grow us all up in the faith.

It is fitting to celebrate baptisms on Pentecost. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles to empower them to do the same things Jesus did and to carry His message to the ends of the Earth. Just like them, we as Christ-followers today are dependent on God's Spirit to empower us for mission. On our own, we can do nothing, yet in and through Christ and by the power of His Spirit, we can do all things! And so, we come expectant to watch as God works fresh grace in the lives of those being baptized, even as we participate in that grace together as a body. And we remember that remain a Holy Spirit-constituted, led, and empowered people.

Truly it is Christ in us, by the power of the Spirit, for the world He loves!

We can't wait to celebrate with you Sunday!

What will worship look like in the new creation? Not a monoculture where everyone assimilates to one style, but a tapestry woven from every culture, language, and people, all brought into the service of the Lord.

This Sunday, Rev. Kristen Yates wrapped up our Practice Resurrection series by exploring how the resurrection calls us outward, toward our global family in Christ and toward the world God loves.

Practicing Resurrection through Creation Care

This Eastertide, our church has been exploring how Jesus's resurrection in history makes a practical difference in how we live each day. A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of interviewing Robert & Erin Lockridge who run For the Life of the World Cafe here in Norwood. In this video they share the story of their work and the ways they experience Jesus's resurrection life free them to be vulnerable and offer up the stuff of their place to God and neighbor as gift.

This Sunday, Brady Friedkin preached from Matthew 25 on what it looks like to practice justice and mercy as people who believe in the resurrection. The call is real, and so is the grace that makes it possible.
