The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio invites the community to experience Faith & (in)Justice, a traveling exhibit (developed by the Freedom Center in partnership with the Cincinnati Museum Center) exploring the complex relationship between religion and social justice in the United States.

Through interactive displays, historical objects, images, and multimedia storytelling, the exhibit examines how the nation’s major Abrahamic faith traditions — Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — have both advanced and, at times, hindered movements for justice and equality. Addressing issues such as slavery and civil rights, gender and LGBTQ+ equality, economic justice, and environmental stewardship, Faith & (in)Justice encourages visitors to reflect on the role faith communities have played in shaping our shared public life. The exhibit highlights courageous individuals and organizations inspired by their beliefs to advocate for dignity, liberation, and the common good.

Each of our four Historically Black Congregations will host the exhibit for one week, with a final week hosted by Christ Church Cathedral. Learn more about the schedule here: https://buff.ly/s1JIPM1

Last Sunday, Bishop White and Canon Katie Forsyth joined Trinity, Newark for a special celebration of their 200th anniversary as a congregation. They joined in worship and coffee hour, met with the vestry, and enjoyed a strawberry treat from the Newark Strawberry Festival, right outside the doors of the building!

Bishop White wrote, " On this Trinity Sunday at Trinity Church, Newark, we celebrated their 200 years as the Body of Christ they are called to be, with conversation among the leaders about how they see the triune God at work in their midst; we shared in worship and fellowship; and we “beat the bounds” of the parish land, praying for the people that this church is called to serve... Blessings on 200 years, beloved people of Trinity Church. What an honor it is to serve as your bishop."

St. Simon of Cyrene, Lincoln Heights welcomed our diocesan transitions minister, the Rev. Melanie Slane, to celebrate Pentecost.

She shared, "Gotta love the way the people share God’s peace at St. Simon of Cyrene Episcopal Church in Lincoln Heights! This congregation is leaning in to what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit; sent into the world as reconcilers, healers, people ready to pass the peace everywhere they go."

"...The reality is that Street Church, though originally conceived to serve the homeless, attracts a cross section of the population today. Every Sunday is a blend of familiar and new faces. Many do live on the streets, but they are joined by people who live in nearby houses, passersby and those who listen from their cars before sharing a meal.

“We don’t ask questions, but people often share what’s going on in their lives, and they tell us every week how grateful they are for what we are doing,” Gay says. Regulars routinely show up early to help church volunteers set up..."

The Rev. Canon Aaron Rogers, canon for ministry, joined Bethany School as keynote speaker for their recent 8th grade graduation.

He shared, "I cannot say enough about the wonderful community of Bethany School. They have a brilliant way of sharing tradition and togetherness. It was a joy to join the staff, teachers, and parents in a wonderful send off for the 8th graders at St. Anne Episcopal Church in West Chester in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. As the graduation speaker on Wednesday, I got to share some wisdom from one of my favorite poets, Lucille Clifton, and serve with the best altar party of all Episcopal School. Congrats to both the students and teachers who found both belovedness and community on this bridge between starshine and clay."

On Pentecost, Bishop White and Canon to the Ordinary Meredith Day Hearn joined Christ Church Cathedral and Episcopalians across the diocese for a special service of Eucharist with confirmations. Sixteen people were confirmed or received and six different congregations participated.

Bishop White shared, "As we celebrate the feast day when the followers of Jesus became the Church, what a blessing to remember the ways that we belong to one another, and to the God of our creation. May the Holy Spirit ever kindle our faith, and light our path."

Earlier this year, our diocese announced its inaugural LGBTQ+ Engagement Grants, intended to empower congregations—both individually and in regional collaborations—to invite, gather, or otherwise engage our LGBTQ+ neighbors in communities and conversations of faith. These grants support both invitation to LGBTQ+ people not currently connected to a faith community as well as the deepening of belonging, leadership, and spiritual life among LGBTQ+ Episcopalians already in our midst.

It brings me great joy to share with you that the committee has met and awarded three grants in its first cycle. Our inaugural grants were awarded to Trinity, Capitol Square; Christ Church, Dayton; and St. Anne, West Chester.
