“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

⬇️🔥🙌Before You Skip Church This Sunday… Read This First.🤯🙌

“and let us consider [thoughtfully] how we may encourage one another to love and to do good deeds, 25 not forsaking our meeting together [as believers for worship and instruction], as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more [faithfully] as you see the day [of Christ’s return] approaching.”
Hebrews 10:24,25 Amplified

Harvard researchers and other scientists have spent years studying people who attend church regularly. While research can’t prove that church causes every benefit, it consistently finds strong links between weekly attendance and better mental health, stronger relationships, greater purpose, and even longer life. Here are seven findings that caught my attention…

Research Behind the Benefits of Weekly Church Attendance

1. Church Attendance Is Associated with Better Mental Health

Researchers have found that regular attendance at religious services is associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety, and su***de, along with greater optimism and life satisfaction.

Sources:

* Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Tyler J. VanderWeele and colleagues)
* Koenig, H. G., Handbook of Religion and Health, Oxford University Press, 2012.

2. People Who Attend Weekly Tend to Live Longer

A landmark study following more than 74,000 women over 20 years found that women who attended religious services more than once per week had about a 33% lower risk of death during the study period than those who never attended.

* Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

3. Children Raised with Regular Religious Participation Often Experience Better Outcomes

Research has linked regular religious participation during childhood with:

* Lower rates of drug use
* Lower rates of depression
* Better emotional well-being
* Higher volunteerism
* Greater forgiveness
* Stronger sense of purpose

Sources:

* Chen, Y., Kim, E. S., VanderWeele, T. J. (2020). Religious Upbringing and Health and Well-Being in Adulthood. American Journal of Epidemiology.

4. Stronger Marriages and Family Stability

Numerous studies have found that couples who regularly practice their faith together often report:

* Higher marital satisfaction
* Greater commitment
* Better communication
* Lower divorce rates (though this varies by relationship quality and religious commitment)

Sources:

* National Marriage Project, University of Virginia.
* Wilcox, W. Bradford. The State of Our Unions.

5. Better Social Support and Reduced Loneliness

One of the strongest predictors of long-term health is meaningful social connection. Congregations naturally create support networks that help people through grief, illness, financial hardship, and major life transitions.

* Holt-Lunstad, J., Smith, T. B., & Layton, J. B. (2010). Social Relationships and Mortality Risk: A Meta-analytic Review. PLOS Medicine.
* Harvard Human Flourishing Program.

6. Generosity Is Associated with Greater Happiness

Psychological research consistently finds that people who regularly give their time or resources to others report greater happiness and life satisfaction than those who primarily spend on themselves.

Sources:

* Dunn, E. W., Aknin, L. B., & Norton, M. I. (2008). Spending Money on Others Promotes Happiness. Science.
* Greater Good Science Center, University of California, Berkeley.

7. Religious Participation Is Associated with Greater Purpose and Flourishing

Researchers studying “human flourishing” consistently find that regular participation in religious communities is associated with:

* Greater meaning in life
* More hope
* Greater resilience
* Higher life satisfaction
* Better relationships

Sources:

* Harvard Human Flourishing Program.
* VanderWeele, T. J. Measuring Well-Being: Interconnections Among the Five Domains of Flourishing. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), 2017.

Now…

Science can measure blood pressure.

Science can measure stress.

Science can measure longevity.

But science cannot measure salvation.

The greatest benefit of church isn’t simply a healthier life—it’s a transformed life.

Hebrews 10:24–25 reminds believers not to neglect gathering together but to encourage one another.

Psalm 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

The research explains many of the benefits.

The gospel explains the reason.
