Born today, January 9th 1886 in Belarus, Ida Rosenthal went on to revolutionize women's undergarments. She was co-founder of Maidenform and created a new type of bra that conformed to a womans body instead of flattening it as was the style of the times. She also received a patent for an adjustable fastener and was the first to sell a maternity bra.

On what would have been her birthday, today we are celebrating the amazing Emma Lazarus. Not only is she the famed author of the sonnet "The New Colossus", which is famous for being inscribed on the plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty, but she was also an activist.

Lazarus was an advocate for Jewish immigrants and helped establish the Hebrew Technical Institute which provided vocational training to destitute Jewish immigrants so they could become self-supporting. One of the themes of a lot of her literary work was sensitivity towards immigrants and their need for dignity.

Her "Songs of the Semite" is considered to be the earliest volume of Jewish-American poetry.
