We are grateful to be among the eight outstanding organizations awarded grant funding by the National Park Service this year. Money provided by the Historic Preservation Fund's History of Equal Rights grant program will not only allow us to begin the work of restoring this sacred space, it will enable us to further amplify the history of those interred at United Colored American Cemetery.

Congratulations to all grant recipients!

WASHINGTON – The National Park Service today awarded $5 million to eight projects in six states as part of the Historic Preservation Fund‘s History of Equal Rights grant program, which focuses on the preservation of sites directly associated with the struggle for all Americans to gain equal righ...

John M. Owens was an office assistant and messenger for the Cincinnati Reds for nearly three decades, from 1903 to 1930.

Born into slavery on the Estridge plantation in Montgomery County, Virginia around 1845 or so, Owens was never sure of the date or of his exact age. In 1865, he “ran away with the Union soldiers.” He came to Cincinnati, worked as a coachman, and he rose quickly in black society. When he married Matilda Bunch in 1885, it was a major social event with many distinguished guests in attendance.

Around 1885, John Owens became friends with Cincinnati politician Garry Herrmann and went to work for Herrmann as a messenger. By 1903, Herrmann was president of the Cincinnati Reds and chairman of baseball’s National Commission. John M. Owens became part of the Reds organization and stayed there for 28 years before retiring in 1930.

John M. Owens died in 1942 and is buried in the United American Cemetery. He shares a tombstone with his wife Matilda, who had pre-deceased him.
