No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. --C.S. Lewis

When a couple suffers the death of their child, please don't tell them, "You can have other children." First, they don't want more children. They aren't looking to replace the one they lost. Secondly, maybe they can't have more children. With all good intentions, you just place a huge emotional burden on their already hurting hearts. Instead, give them a tender hug and maybe just keep silent for awhile.

When someone is terminally ill or has passed away, please don't tell the family that "God needed another angel." First, it's not true. When people die, they don't become angels. Secondly, God is not a murderer, who by selfishness, decides to arbitrarily take people to be with Him. It may sound comforting to you, but it is not to anyone else who hears it.

Loss is not just about the death of a loved one. Loss comes in many forms which can lead to deep grieving. Have you lost your favorite job? Have you lost the love of your child? Have you lost hope for other reasons?
Don't believe for a moment that all answers are "cut and dry"; instead, they are part of the journey of trusting God through those dark times.
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble..." Psalm 46:1

When your heart is breaking, you can place your hope and trust in the Lord.
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. — Psalm 31:24

Grief happens when you believe that you love more than you are loved.

Grief happens to those who love.

Grief is not just about the death of a loved one. It can be about any kind of loss.....the loss of income, the rebellious child, the unnerving neighbor, bad decisions that bring bad results, divorce, addictions, and many, many more.
These things are real and they dig deep in our souls. God can lead you through any and all of them to finally bring you peace.

If you are deep in your grief, I'd like to recommend that you read many of the Psalms in the Old Testament. Many start with a lament, but end with the trust and compassion of God. These Psalms may lead you to the healing you've been searching for.

God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He is the one who comforts us in all our tribulation.
