We celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the contributions of members of our congregation to Black History. Our first Black History profile is for Brother Jerry Wynn.
On April 23, 1972, Jerry entered the Cincinnati Fire Department's recruit class. He was in the last class given by the City which was not friendly to minorities and females. It was helpful to have military service or mechanical knowledge. The City recruited a class of African American men. The Cadet Class, to train that class. Jerry was the only African American in his class! They would become regular fire fighters at age 21. Jerry's first promotion was to Aerial Truck Operator in August 1975. During this time he and his captain were involved in saving the life of a fellow firefighter. As a result Jerry received a Medal of Valor during a ceremony held in Columbus, OH. Upon his return to Cincinnati, he received a plaque from the City of Cincinnati. Most importantly, he received a plaque from his, First Baptist Church of Oakley, church family.
July 1985 he was promoted to Fire Lieutenant at Fire House 31 in Oakley. His next promotion to Captain was in January 1989. He was Captain at House 31 until he decided to work a 40 hour week. In 1998, he was assigned to the Operation Division as a District Supervisor. Jerry was then assigned to the Chief's headquarters. He was unhappy there. Making coffee and doing paperwork was not how he wanted to end his career. In 1999, he decided to retire. Jerry has been retired for over 21 years. He never returned to work. He always said "Why should I get another job, after leaving a job I loved for 31 years?"
WE SALUTE BROTHER JERRY WYNN FOR A JOB WELL DONE!
