The Bread of Life: An Invitation to Relationship
A One-Minute Homily

Jesus offers of his very self when he says, "I am the bread of life." What Jesus offers us is a relationship. Fr. Eric Sundrup, SJ, reflects on what it means...

Take chances! Get Messy! Make mistakes!
-Ms. Frizzle, The Magic School Bus

I’m doing a monthly 1 min homily for The Jesuit Post throughout the coming year.

Shout out to Tucker Redding for the video editing... especially since I was days behind schedule ;)

My brother sent this video to me last night and as I watched this with some of the volunteers before Mass today we realized that as more and more people start coming back to Sunday Masses, a scene quite similar to this might be playing out in many churches across the country. 😉

Please pray for our country, our city, and our XU campus. The Black Lives Matter sign was vandalized again sometime after the end of our Good Friday service. Late this evening, as it was replaced with the campus police's help, a number of the students from XU's Black Student's Association gathered to comfort and support each other. They shared many of their fears, their hopes, their frustrations, their anger, and their deep pain. There is so much suffering, and I was deeply moved by their honesty. I promised them that the prayers of the Bellarmine Community would be with them on this evening. We noted that of all the nights for this to happen, it's Good Friday.

Inside the Chapel a few hours earlier, we were venerating the cross and the mystery of pain, suffering, love, and hope that it symbolizes. The phrase "already but not yet" weighs heavily on us all tonight. We know that people of color have been unjustly forced to bear the crosses of oppression and prejudice. On this holy night, please join your prayers with the entire Christian community as we hope, work, and strive to build a world where love conquers death and oppression.

Dear Friends,

I’ve heard from many members of our community who were angered and hurt by the headlines and social media posts that followed the publication of a CDF (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) statement on the blessing of same-sex unions. I know that it opens many wounds for the LGBTQ+ members of our community, and allies everywhere are disheartened. The language of the official text parses the fine details of Church law on sacraments and blessings, and it can feel cold and harsh.

In many ways, it is a pastoral failure. Bishops and Vatican offices should be wise enough to anticipate international headlines that focus on one phrase and equate homosexuality as a sin. This is painful and hurtful, and it damages our LGBTQ+ sisters and brothers and the Church. Across the world, some Church leaders have spent the past few days attempting to address this pastoral failure. For many, the damage is already done.

Given the emails I’ve received and the conversations I’ve had, I wanted to post something for the whole community to see. I want to make sure you all know that Bellarmine Chapel will continue to live out the Gospel as we strive to be a safe, loving and inclusive place for all our Catholic LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters. You have been and will continue to be a blessing in my life and the life of our Church.

-Fr. Eric
