Hail To The Lord’s Anointed ( #311)
Hail to the Lord’s Anointed,
great David’s greater Son!
Hail, in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free,
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
He comes with comfort speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
were precious in his sight,
He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
and love, joy, hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth;
before him on the mountains
shall peace, the herald, go;
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
O’er ev’ry foe victorious,
he on his throne shall rest,
from age to age more glorious,
all-blessing and all-blessed;
the tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever–
that name to us is Love.
Prayer
Bow down Your ear, O Lord, and hear us, for we are poor and needy. Be merciful to us, O Lord, for we cry to You all day long. O High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: You dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, but we confess that we have been rich in pride. Blessed are those who mourn, but we have had little sorrow for our sins. Blessed are the meek, but we have been a stiff-necked people. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, but we have fed ourselves with unrighteousness. Blessed are the merciful, but we have been unforgiving and impatient. Blessed are the pure in heart, but we have pursued our evil desires. Blessed are the peacemakers, but we have been angry and divisive. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, but our lives have not challenged the world.
Though the LORD is on high, yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar. Though we walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive us. The LORD will perfect that which concerns us; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.
You resist the proud, but give grace to the humble. We humble ourselves under Your mighty hand, that You may exalt us in due time, casting all our care upon You, for You care for us. And may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after we have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle us. To You be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(Ps 86:1-3, Mt 5:3-10, Isa 57:15, Ps 138:5-8, 1 Pet 5:5-11)
Assurance of Grace: Luke 18:9-14
Just As I Am ( #501)
Just as I am, without one plea
but that thy blood was shed for me,
and that thou bidd’st me come to thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, and waiting not
to rid my soul of one dark blot,
to thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, though tossed about
with many a conflict, many a doubt,
fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
sight, riches, healing of the mind,
yea, all I need, in thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
because thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, thy love unknown
has broken ev’ry barrier down;
now, to be thine, yea, thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 9
Psalm 113: O Praise the LORD (Ps. 113)
O praise the LORD; Sing praise,
All servants of the LORD.
Come praise the LORD’s great name,
Bless Him forevermore.
From dawn to dusk, from east to west,
O let the LORD’s name there be blessed.
LORD over nations all,
His glory crowns the sky.
Who’s like the LORD our God,
Enthroned in heaven high?
Who condescends that He may know
All things in heav’n and earth below?
He lifts the poor from dust,
And from the ashes’ heap.
He lifts the needy high,
Among nobility.
The barren wife has joy restored
With home and children. Praise the LORD.
Sermon: Exalting the Humble (Luke 1:46-55)
Psalm 72:5-8: Nomads Will Bow (Ps. 72B)
Nomads will bow to him as king;
Licking the dust, his foes will bend.
Islands and Tarshish gifts will bring,
Sheba and Seba tribute send.
So shall all kings before him fall,
All nations his commands obey.
He’ll save the needy when they call,
Those who are poor and have no aid.
He’ll show the poor his sympathy,
And he will save the needy’s life.
From fraud and force he’ll set them free;
Their blood is precious in his sight.
So he will live, and Sheba’s gold
They’ll as a gift before him lay;
In constant prayer they’ll him uphold,
And they will bless him all the day.
