I chose this photo as our first “profile” picture because it is one of my absolute favorites . It is called “Mary with Eve”, and was drawn by Sister Grace Re*****on.
There is so much to unpack in this picture. it speaks volumes of Grace and redemption and hope, to name just a few.
If you notice, Eve is still holding the fruit, eyes downward, heartbroken and hopeless, her leg snared by the enemy, trapped somewhere between knowing what she has done and the guilt and shackles that has become her burden to carry.
And then we see Mary. Beautiful Mary. She doesn’t stand aloof and above Eve, no. She stands and looks at her with compassion… touching her cheek, pulling her hand to her womb, where the Savior still grew.
We don’t know why Eve said “no” to God and His plan all those years ago, in the perfection of the garden. Maybe that is why… Eve, at the moment the serpent sang his song to her, didn’t know a world yet tainted by sin…. She didn’t know what separation from God felt like. She didn’t understand the ramifications of such a simple choice ….Maybe? I know the song of the enemy has beckoned and called to me along this journey…..
We do know that Mary did, however . She knew generations of heartbreak had passed since Eve made her choice. She knew what years of entanglement in sin had caused to the beautiful creation, and everyone since The Fall. She knew she had to say yes…
Mary KNEW the treasure God had tucked within her womb.
And that is evident when she meets Eve, exactly where is is … trapped and downtrodden and hopeless …
I can almost hear her whisper …
“Eve! Do you feel that ? That tiny little kick? That is forgiveness! He is here ! God is here Eve! He came to make a way! Hope is not forgotten!! YOU are not forgotten Eve!”
And somehow ? I remember neither am I ….
And THAT is my goal with this group… to meet each other exactly where we are and love like Jesus does…..
