WHY I AM A CHRISTIAN
I am a Christian because Jesus captured my heart by His love. If you don’t know Him let me tell you a little about why I love Him so.
First of all, I have come to believe that Jesus is my God and Savior. He asked me the following questions: “26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26). I had nothing to offer to redeem my soul from the sin to which I was enslaved. So Jesus saved me from the worst slavery the world has ever known – the slavery of sin. At one time I was lost. I didn’t know how lost I was until God revealed His love to me. God said, “16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16-17). Without Jesus I would perish. And God didn’t wait until I was good to save me, but He sent His son while I was still in sin. “ 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).
God’s love for me caused me to love Him too! And since I love Him I want to please Him. Jesus said, “15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15). So I began to keep His commandments and found His commandments to bring great joy, happiness, peace, contentment, and security to my soul. I repented of my sins – had a change of mind and behavior. I confess Him each day in the presence of men. I put Him on in baptism so that His righteousness is now the means of my being just in the sight of God.
And now I do my best to live for Him every day. As Paul, the apostle wrote, “22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:22-23).
I no longer live in the fear of death – separation from God in eternity, condemned to suffer the fate of the everlasting fire of hell – because it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Oh, what joy inexpressible and full of glory!
Are you a Christian? Why not? It will bring you greater joy than you have ever known. It will make you a better person than you otherwise could be. It will give you the hope that through His mercy and grace you will be with Him eternity. If you are not a Christian, won’t you become one. Do it without delay. It is a decision you will never regret making!
