Twelve years of bleeding. Twelve years where nobody could hug her, sit with her, or eat at her table. She did not ask him for anything. She just reached through the crowd for the edge of his robe. He noticed. And he stopped the whole crowd to find her, and when she came trembling and told him everything, he did not scold her.

He called her daughter.

Thirty eight years.

That is how long he had been lying beside that pool, waiting for the water to move, watching other people get there first. Jesus walked up and asked him the one question nobody had bothered to ask.

They brought her to him holding stones.

They had the law on their side. They had the evidence. They had a crowd. And they had rocks already in their hands.

Jesus knelt down and started writing in the dirt.

We do not know what he wrote. We only know what happened. One by one, the oldest first, they dropped the stones and walked away.

And then it was just the two of them.

He did not excuse what she did. He told her to leave it behind. But before he said one word about her sin, he made sure she was the only one still standing.

Grace goes first. It always has.
