“Halloween Used to Be Cute”
—I remember when Halloween was simple—
when the biggest scare was a rubber spider
and a “boo!” from behind the couch.

When pumpkins smiled with triangle eyes,
and bedsheets made the best ghosts.
When Charlie Brown waited for his Great Pumpkin,
and Scooby-Doo always caught the villain—
because it was never really a monster after all.

Back then, we carved faces, not fangs.
We decorated porches, not graves.
We handed out candy, not fear.
It was make-believe—
not mockery of what’s dark.

But now, I walk down store aisles
and see skulls with bloodshot eyes,
demons with moving mouths,
and laughter that doesn’t sound so playful anymore.

It’s not hiding now,
what it used to disguise.
The darkness is loud.
The spiritual is real.
And what we once called “pretend”
has turned into something proud.

But even so—
I light my porch light anyway.
Not to join in,
but to shine.
To remind the little ones walking by
that the light still wins.
That pumpkins can still smile,
and hope still glows warm,
and there’s still goodness
for those who choose it.

Because no matter what the world decorates,
the truth remains—
darkness can dress up all it wants,
but it can’t outshine the Light.
