When does money stop being a tool—and start becoming an idol?

Scripture calls us to be wise stewards of what God gives us. But there is a difference between responsible stewardship and allowing money to control our decisions.

In Acts 19, Demetrius’s livelihood was threatened by the spread of the gospel. His reaction exposes a question that still matters: what happens when our desire for financial security begins competing with our obedience to God?

Money is useful. Stewardship matters. But Jesus warned that we cannot serve both God and money. What has the final say in your life?

Can you trust God with what you’re afraid to lose?

Fear of loss can quietly control enormous parts of our lives. We hold tightly to relationships, plans, money, security, opportunities, comfort, and the future because we are afraid of what might happen if something changes.

But Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us that the Lord goes before His people. He is with them. He does not leave or forsake them.

That doesn’t mean we will never lose something we value, but rather it means loss does not mean God has abandoned us.

So what are you holding onto because you’re afraid? Can you place even that in God’s hands?

Does your life support what you say you believe?

The Christians in Ephesus were accused of disrupting the city—but when the city clerk addressed the crowd, he pointed out something important: Paul’s companions had not robbed temples or blasphemed their goddess.

Their message challenged idolatry, but their conduct did not give their opponents an easy legitimate accusation against them. What does this mean for us?

Our lives should reinforce the gospel we proclaim—not undermine it. People may disagree with what Christians believe. But our behavior should never give them a good reason to dismiss Christ because of hypocrisy, cruelty, dishonesty, or needless offense.

Practice what you preach.

Being courageous doesn’t mean refusing to listen to good advice.

In Acts 19, Paul wanted to enter the theater during a dangerous riot in Ephesus. His fellow believers—and even local officials who cared about him—urged him not to go. Paul listened.

Sometimes we become so convinced that we know what needs to happen next that we stop listening to the people God has placed around us. Scripture repeatedly connects wisdom with receiving good counsel. So who has permission to tell you, “This may not be a good idea”?

Humility doesn’t make us weak. Sometimes wisdom means listening before acting.

What if God is calling you in a direction you haven’t considered yet

It’s easy to assume that because God led us somewhere in the past, He must want us to keep doing exactly the same thing forever. But Paul continued seeking the Lord’s direction for what came next.

The same should be true for us—both individually and as a church.
Are you regularly asking God where He wants you to go, how He wants you to serve, and what He wants you to do next? Or have you slipped onto spiritual cruise control?

Faithfulness to yesterday’s calling should never replace seeking God’s will today.

What happens when the gospel begins to threaten something we value?

In Acts 19, the gospel has spread throughout Ephesus—and people’s lives are changing. But those changes begin affecting more than private beliefs. Demetrius and the silversmiths realize that if people continue turning away from idols, their livelihood, social standing, and the cultural importance of Artemis may all be threatened.

Their fear quickly becomes anger, and their anger grows into a citywide riot.

The passage forces us to ask an uncomfortable question: What am I afraid to lose—and how might that fear shape my response when Jesus calls for my allegiance?

Sometimes the things competing with Christ are obvious. Other times they may be money, security, status, influence, comfort, tradition, or simply the life we have grown accustomed to.

Following Jesus will sometimes challenge what we value. The question is whether those things will become more important to us than Christ Himself.

Join us at First Baptist Church China as we study Acts 19:21–41 and consider what happens when following Jesus begins to cost us something.

What if being corrected isn’t a sign of weakness—but an opportunity to grow?

Apollos was gifted, knowledgeable, and already doing incredible things for the gospel. The believers in Ephesus were sincere in their faith. Yet both still had things they needed to learn.

And that’s true of all of us.

None of us has everything figured out.

When correction is offered gently, lovingly, and biblically, we don’t have to become defensive. We can receive it as an opportunity for God to strengthen and mature our faith.

Christian maturity isn’t never being wrong.
It’s being humble enough to keep growing.

What are you unwilling to give up in order to follow Jesus?

In Acts 19, new believers in Ephesus faced a costly decision. The practices they abandoned were not meaningless to them—they were valuable, familiar, and useful.

But when the gospel took hold of their lives, they realized they could not keep one foot in their old life while claiming allegiance to Christ.

That raises a difficult question for us:

What have I become unwilling to surrender because it feels too valuable, too familiar, or too useful?

Real repentance sometimes costs us something. Grace is freely given—but following Jesus means allowing Him to reshape what we value, practice, and refuse to let go.

Is avoiding a hard conversation really the loving thing to do?

Sometimes we stay silent because we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings, create tension, or “rock the boat.” But Christian love doesn’t require us to ignore truth.

In Acts 18, Priscilla and Aquila recognized that Apollos’s understanding was incomplete. They didn’t embarrass him or attack him—they took him aside and helped him understand more accurately. The goal of correction was not to win an argument, but to help a fellow believer grow.

Speaking truth and showing love are not opposites. Biblical love requires both.

We should be willing to speak when something matters—and willing to do it with humility, gentleness, and a genuine desire for the good of the other person.

Do I want Jesus—or do I just want what I think Jesus can give me?

In Acts 19, some people recognized the power associated with the name of Jesus, but they wanted to use that power without actually knowing, following, or submitting to Him.

That same temptation still exists.

We can want Jesus to fix our problems, protect our families, improve our circumstances, give us peace, or answer our prayers—while resisting His claim over our lives.

But Jesus is not a tool we use to get what we want.

He is Lord.

The deeper question of faith isn’t simply, “What can Jesus do for me?” It is:

Do I want Jesus Himself—even when following Him requires surrender?
