𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲

"After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.'" (Nehemiah 4:14)

During the final months of the Second World War, a small, ragtag group of art experts and historians took on an impossible mission. They were known as the Monuments Men. Their task was not to fight on the front lines in the traditional sense, but to race behind the lines to rescue the world’s most precious art, statues, and historical treasures from being pulverized by war or stolen by tyranny. These men knew that if they failed, the history and identity of entire nations might be erased forever. They stood in the gap between destruction and preservation, fueled by the belief that some things are too precious to be lost.

When I think about the home, I see it in much the same way. Your family is not just a place where you sleep or store your belongings. It is a monument of God’s grace, a treasure chest filled with the hearts of your children and the legacy of your marriage. Yet, there is an adversary who seeks to erode that culture. Like a slow, creeping rot, a root of bitterness can enter a home through a sharp word, a neglected boundary, or a lack of intentional prayer. It starts small, but it aims to steal the joy, kill the peace, and destroy the unity that God has built within your four walls.

You are being commissioned today as a defender of your own house. You are the spiritual curator of the culture inside your home. This means you do not have to be a passive bystander when you see toxic patterns trying to take root. When fear or anger tries to walk through the front door, you have the authority in Christ to stand up and say, "Not here."

"We need some men and women who will say to hell, 'You're not taking my precious treasures. I will never ever stand aside and let you steal and kill and destroy what God has given to me.'"

Fighting for your family is not about a grand, dramatic gesture. It is about the quiet, steady work of being the gatekeeper of your family’s atmosphere. You decide if you will allow the enemy to plant a seed of frustration or if you will plant a seed of patience.

Fighting for your family means choosing to interrupt a cycle of disrespect with a calm, firm word. It means carving out space for God in the middle of a chaotic week so your children see that their foundation is built on something that cannot be shaken. You are preserving the treasure of your family’s heart, one interaction at a time. Your resistance to the things that would cause division is the greatest act of love you can offer to those who share your name.

What is one specific, recurring tension in your home that has been allowed to linger, and what is one small, tangible way you can guard against that negative influence today?

Lord, thank You for the incredible treasure of my family. I recognize that I am called to be the guardian of the spirit and culture within my home. When I feel overwhelmed or tempted to let my guard down, remind me that You are the source of my strength and my shield. Give me the wisdom to see where the enemy is trying to plant seeds of bitterness, and grant me the grace to replace them with Your love and peace. I choose today to stand firm, knowing that You are fighting for me and through me for the people I love most. Amen.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺

Consider a dusty, framed photograph sitting on the corner of a desk. It captures a moment from years ago, showing a family with small children living in the midst of a chaos that felt like a noise problem rather than a precious life rhythm. In the picture, everyone is laughing and disheveled, entirely unaware that the clock is ticking so quickly. When you look at a scene like that, it is easy to see how someone might allow the stress of the day, including the undone chores, the mounting bills, and the endless errands, to distract them from the fact that they are walking through their house surrounded by more wealth than a bank vault could ever hold.

We often look at our families as a list of things to manage or a series of obligations to fulfill, but rarely stop to consider that the very people sitting at our dinner table are the greatest treasures God has ever placed in our care. It is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of security, thinking that real wealth is found in retirement accounts or the equity in our homes. People work long hours to provide for their loved ones, often sacrificing the very thing they are working to support. But if one is honest, the true foundation of a life well-lived is not what is brought home in a paycheck. It is the godly relationships fostered within one's own four walls.

In a world that seems to be tearing at the seams, a family that chooses to believe the truth and worship Jesus Christ together is a rare commodity. It is a lighthouse in a storm, a monument of grace, and a treasure that requires constant protection. When you shift your perspective, you stop seeing your family members as people who demand your time and start seeing them as people who deserve your devotion. It changes how you speak when you come through the front door after a long day. It changes how you pray before you go to sleep.

"Your children are your greatest treasure. Your grandchildren are your most precious possession. Your godly family is a treasure."

You must guard this treasure with the same intensity that you would protect your most valuable possessions. After all, the world is constantly looking for ways to steal, kill, and destroy the peace that God intends for your home. Remember the wisdom found in Proverbs 24:3, which tells us that by wisdom a house is built and through understanding it is established. Protecting your treasure does not always require grand gestures or dramatic displays of heroism. Most of the time, it simply requires your presence, your patience, and your choice to value these people above your own convenience. As you nurture this environment, you are reminded that God promises to provide for every need according to His riches in glory. (Philippians 4:19)

Before you leave your home or start your workday, stop and look directly into the eyes of your spouse or your children. Do not look at your phone. Do not glance at the clock. Just look at them and offer a genuine, heartfelt word of gratitude for their presence in your life. Tell them that you are glad they are yours. In a world that is always moving, that one moment of intentional connection is the best way to secure the treasure you have been given.

Think back to a recent moment where you felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities of family life. If you could go back to that moment, how would seeing your family as a treasure change your reaction or your words?

Today’s Prayer
Father, thank You for the people You have placed in my life. I confess that I often lose sight of the value of my family because I am too focused on the noise. Please help me to see them through Your eyes as the precious treasures they truly are. I want to be a better guardian of this home, protecting the peace and the love that You have entrusted to me. Give me the grace to set aside my own agenda and be present with those I love. In Jesus' name, Amen.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗢𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much." Luke 16:10

We have spent this week with a bird. A nest. A road. A seemingly insignificant law in Deuteronomy about what to do if you happen to encounter a mother sitting on her eggs.

It sounds like the kind of Scripture you read past on your way to something more important.

But everything we've looked at this week has been the same truth in different clothing. Moses turning aside to see, five words that opened the entire Exodus. David asking if there was anyone left in Saul's house he could show kindness to, and finding Mephibosheth, and setting the template for what grace looks like. The farmer who doesn't quit between the sowing and the reaping. The man who walks past the burning bush and the man who stops.

They are all the same story. Small obedience. Big doors.

Jesus says it plainly in Luke 16:10: whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. This is not a motivational principle. It is a description of how the kingdom of God actually works. The person who is faithful in the small things is the person God can trust with the larger things. Not because they've passed a test, but because the small things reveal who they actually are.

What you do when no one is watching is who you are. And who you are is what God works with.

The mother bird law isn't about birds. It's about the kind of person who stops on a road when they don't have to, shows mercy when no one would blame them for not bothering, does the right thing in a moment so small it will never make it into any story anyone tells. And God sees it. God records it. God responds to it.

Here is the invitation as you close out this week: look at your ordinary day tomorrow with new eyes. The commute, the conversation, the moment of frustration where you choose patience instead of reaction, the small act of generosity, the forgiveness you extend again. None of it is too small for God to notice. None of it is disconnected from the larger story He is writing with your life.

The hinge is small. The door is enormous. And the door is waiting.

Be someone who turns aside to see. Be someone who lets the mother bird go. Be someone who keeps sowing even when the field looks empty. Be someone who shows kindness to the people who can't return it.

That is the kind of person God puts the wind behind. And with the wind at your back, even the hardest road gets shorter.

Reflection: Write down three small acts of obedience or kindness from this past week that nobody saw. Then read them back as a prayer, telling God you trust Him with these small things, and asking Him to open the doors He has waiting on the other side.

Today's Prayer: Lord, thank You for this week and for the truth that small things matter. That big doors swing on little hinges, that You are watching the ordinary moments, that faithfulness in the small things is not lost on You. Help me carry this into next week. Help me be someone who turns aside, who lets the mother bird go, who keeps sowing, who shows kindness when it isn't required. I want the wind at my back. And I trust You with the doors. Amen.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗔 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺

"Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Samuel 9:1

For years, King Saul hunted David like an animal.

He threw a spear at him twice. He sent armies after him. He turned the entire apparatus of his kingdom toward one goal: eliminating David before David could take the throne that God had already promised him. David spent some of the best years of his life living in caves and running for his life from a king who had no rational reason to hate him.

Saul is dead now. His armies are gone. His kingdom has passed to David. And David, the man who had every reason to let the house of Saul fade into irrelevance, does something that nobody expected.

He asks: is there anyone left in the house of Saul that I can show kindness to?

Not for political strategy. Not to consolidate power by appearing merciful. Because of a promise he made to Jonathan, Saul's son, David's closest friend, years ago, before either of them knew how the story would end. And David is the kind of man who keeps his promises even when the other party is no longer around to hold him to it.

They find Mephibosheth. Jonathan's son, Saul's grandson. He is crippled in both feet, living in obscurity in a place called Lo-debar, which literally means "no pasture." A place of nothing. A place people go when they've been forgotten.

David sends for him. And when Mephibosheth arrives, terrified, bowing to the ground, calling himself a dead dog, David says: don't be afraid. I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul. And you will eat at my table for the rest of your life.

Every day. At the king's table. The grandson of his enemy.

This is what it looks like when the mother bird principle becomes a life. David didn't show mercy to Mephibosheth because Mephibosheth deserved it. He showed it because that's the kind of person David was. Someone who looked for opportunities to show kindness even to people who had no claim on it, even when no one would have blamed him for looking the other way.

And God called David a man after His own heart.

Is there someone in your life from whom you've been withholding kindness? Maybe rightfully so, maybe they don't deserve it, maybe they were more wrong than you. The question David asks is worth sitting with: is there anyone I can show kindness to? Not because they've earned it. Because that's the kind of person you want to be.

That's the kind of person God puts the wind behind.

Reflection: Think of one person in your life you've been withholding kindness from, intentionally or by default. One small act of intentional kindness toward them today. Not because they deserve it. Because you want to be the kind of person David was.

Today's Prayer: Lord, it is easy to show kindness to people who are kind to me. It's something else entirely to show it to people who haven't earned it, who have hurt me, who I don't feel like loving today. Give me David's heart. Help me ask the question, is there anyone I can show kindness to, and then actually do it. Amen.

𝗗𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

There is a phenomenon in farming called the ugly stage.

It happens right before a crop breaks through the surface of the soil. Underground, everything is happening. The seed has split, the roots are forming, the shoot is pushing upward. But above ground, the field still looks like dirt. If you didn't know what was happening beneath the surface, you would have no evidence that anything was working at all.

A lot of people quit during the ugly stage.

Galatians 6:9 is one of the most specific encouragements in the New Testament, and it's specifically aimed at people in the ugly stage. Paul doesn't say you will reap in due season if you performed well. He says if you do not give up. The condition is endurance, not perfection. The promise is tied to persistence, to the decision, every day, to keep doing the right thing even when the field still looks like dirt.

Weariness in well-doing is real. Paul names it because he lived it. He knew what it felt like to extend grace to people who didn't want it, to preach to crowds who rejected the message, to pour himself out for communities that caused him grief. Weariness is not a character flaw. It's a natural consequence of sustained effort without visible return.

The question is what you do with it.

There is a story in 1 Kings 18 where Elijah is praying for rain after a three-year drought. He sends his servant to look toward the sea seven times. Six times the servant comes back: nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. And Elijah doesn't quit. He sends him a seventh time. And the servant comes back with this: there's a cloud the size of a man's hand on the horizon.

That's the ugly stage. A cloud the size of a hand. And within moments, the sky turns dark, the wind picks up, and the rain comes down in torrents.

You may be looking at a cloud the size of a hand right now. The relationship that's slowly healing. The prayer that's finally moving after years of standing. The character being built in the quiet, unseen moments of consistent choice. It looks small. It may look like almost nothing.

But you are not in the beginning of the story. You are in the ugly stage, which means you might be closer to the harvest than you've ever been.

Don't quit now. Send the servant one more time.

Reflection: Identify one area where you have been close to quitting because you can't see progress. Write down the "cloud the size of a hand," even the smallest sign that something is happening. Then choose to send the servant one more time today.

Today's Prayer: Lord, I am weary in some places. I won't pretend otherwise. I've been doing the right thing and the field still looks empty. Give me the faith of Elijah, to keep praying, keep standing, keep sowing even when what I can see is a cloud the size of a hand. I trust that You are working beneath the surface. Don't let me quit before the rain comes. Amen.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸

"Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

Cyclists call it a gift. When the wind shifts direction and instead of pushing against you, it pushes you forward. You're still pedaling. The road is still the same road. But suddenly the effort required drops dramatically and the distance you cover increases. Something invisible is helping you move.

There is a spiritual version of this that most people miss entirely because they're looking for the dramatic version of blessing. The sudden windfall, the miraculous turnaround, the moment everything changes overnight.

But God describes something quieter and more powerful in Deuteronomy 22. Show mercy in a small, private moment of kindness on an ordinary road, and He says: it will go well with you. He is describing the accumulation of something invisible. A force that builds behind the person who is consistently faithful in the small things when nobody is watching.

The Holy Spirit wind getting behind your back.

Galatians 6:9 frames it as a harvest principle: you will reap in due season if you don't give up. Not immediately. Not dramatically. In due season. Which means there is a season of sowing first, of doing the right thing quietly, consistently, without visible return, and then a season when what you've been sowing starts to come in.

The problem is that most people quit between the sowing and the reaping. The kindness went unacknowledged. The forgiveness wasn't met with gratitude. The generosity wasn't returned. And the temptation is to conclude that it isn't working.

But Galatians says: don't be deceived. You will reap. In due season.

David understood this. He spent years being chased by King Saul, years of doing the right thing when the wrong thing would have been so much easier. He had opportunities to take Saul's life and end his suffering. He chose mercy instead. Every single time. And those years of quiet faithfulness, of choosing kindness and restraint when no one would have blamed him for choosing otherwise, they were building something. When David finally came to the throne, he didn't arrive there alone. He arrived with the wind of a thousand small obediences at his back.

What are you sowing right now in the small, unseen moments of your life? The patience you choose when you're exhausted. The encouragement you speak over someone who can't do anything for you. The forgiveness you extend again, even though you're tired of extending it. The generosity you practice in private.

That is not small. That is the wind building.

Keep sowing. The season is coming.

Reflection: Write down one area of your life where you have been consistently doing the right thing without visible return, sowing without yet seeing a harvest. Then read Galatians 6:9 over that area out loud as a declaration. The season is coming.

Today's Prayer: Lord, I'll be honest. I'm tired in some places. I've been doing the right thing and I can't always see what it's producing. Give me the faith today to keep sowing, to keep choosing kindness and obedience even when the harvest feels far off. I trust Your timing. I trust that You are building something I can't yet see. Let the wind be at my back. Amen.
