It is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:13

In Singapore, the government encourages people to support good causes by donation-matching. It โ€œtops upโ€ donations to specific charities by contributing an equal amount or more. By effectively multiplying peopleโ€™s contributions, it hopes to encourage them to become more involved in charitable giving.

This two-pronged approach reminds me of how believers in Jesus are called to Godโ€™s standards of holiness in our discipleship journey. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul urges them โ€œto work out [their] salvationโ€ (2:12) and โ€œpress onโ€ (3:12, 14). At the same time, he stresses that โ€œit is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purposeโ€ (2:13).

Believers in Jesus arenโ€™t made right with God by good works or performance. But there is an idea of partnership in our spiritual growth. It requires heart and effort on our part, yet we do not do it by human strength. Having saved us by grace, God calls us to be holyโ€”set apart for Himโ€”and we respond in sincerity and gratitude. As we seek to obey and please Him, He enables and helps us to do so. He shows us when we go wrong (Philippians 3:15), gives us strength to resist temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), and empowers us to do whatโ€™s right in His eyes (Ephesians 2:10).

Reflect & Pray: What are your biggest challenges in seeking to be faithful and pleasing to God? How can you rely more on the Holy Spiritโ€™s strength?

Holy God, please help me to be holy and faithful in my journey, for I know that You desire me to be like Your Son Jesus.

โ€œThen the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, โ€˜Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!โ€™โ€ Revelation 6:15โ€“16 (NIV)

There is a day coming that the Bible describes with absolute seriousness: the return of Jesus and the catching away of His Church. Scripture says it will happen suddenly, โ€œin the twinkling of an eye,โ€ when those who belong to Christ are gathered to meet Him. After that moment, the world will enter a season the Bible calls tribulation, a time of shaking, confusion, and global unrest unlike anything in human history. Jesus Himself warned that it would be unlike anything that has ever been seen or will ever be seen again, and the prophets agreed that it would be a time of deep trouble on the earth.

When that season begins, scripture shows humanity reacting in fear and desperation. Leaders, wealthy men, the powerful, and the ordinary alike will recognize that something far beyond human control has taken place. Revelation says they will hide in caves and cry out for the mountains to cover them, not because of political instability or natural disaster alone, but because they realize they are standing before the reality of Godโ€™s judgment. The systems of the world will collapse, fear will spread, and what once seemed secure will no longer hold. Everything that people trusted apart from God will fail in that moment.

But the message of Godโ€™s word is not given to produce fear. It is given to produce readiness. Before that day comes, God is extending mercy. Before the trumpet sounds, grace is available. Before the world is shaken, hearts can still be anchored in Christ. This is why the call is urgent: draw near to God now. Not later. Not when life slows down. Not when it feels convenient. Jesus is coming again, and the most important preparation is not external; it is internal. It is knowing Him, walking with Him, and living close to Him. Religion is not enough, emotion is not enough, and distance from God is dangerous. Only a real relationship with Jesus will stand when everything else is shaken.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, awaken my heart and draw me close to You. Remove every distraction, every cold place, and every distance in my walk with You. I donโ€™t want to live unaware or unprepared for Your return. Teach me to love Your presence and value Your Word above everything else. Strengthen me to stay faithful in a world that is drifting further from You. Purify my heart, steady my spirit, and keep me anchored in Your grace. Let my life not be shallow or divided, but fully surrendered to You. Help me to walk closely with You every day so that I am ready when You come. Amen.

โ€œWherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.โ€ Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)

Throughout scripture, one truth keeps rising to the surface: God is not only calling His people to believe, but to live ready. Ready for His coming, ready for His presence, ready for His voice, and ready for the life He has placed before us. The Christian life is not passive waiting; it is active surrender. There is a life that carries the awareness of eternity into every decision. Jesus is coming again, not as a symbolic idea, but as a real event that will interrupt human history without warning. In a moment, everything familiar will shift. That truth is not given to create fear, but to produce readiness. The early church lived with that expectation, and it shaped how they loved, how they endured, and how they obeyed.

But readiness is not only about the future, it is about the present condition of the heart. Scripture calls believers to purity, not as legalism, but as response. When a person truly carries the hope of seeing Jesus, it changes what they allow into their lives. It produces a sensitivity to sin and a hunger for holiness. Not perfection without struggle, but direction toward God without compromise. This is why Jesus spoke so often about watchfulness. Life can become filled with distractions, pleasures, and pressures that slowly dull spiritual awareness. A person can be so occupied with the temporary that they lose sight of the eternal. But the call of God is to lay aside every weight, not only the obvious sins, but anything that slows the race of faith.

There is also a deeper reality: the presence of God is not something to visit; it is something to carry. When His people walk closely with Him, their lives begin to reflect Him. What touches Him begins to touch others through them. Faith becomes transferable, not just spoken, but lived. And everywhere they go, they leave evidence of a life that has been with Jesus. Yet none of this is achieved by striving alone. It is produced by surrender. Surrender of rights, surrender of control, surrender of running from Godโ€™s voice, and surrender of self-rule. The invitation of Christ is still the same: come, follow Me. Not partially, not selectively, but fully.

So the question becomes simple and searching: are we living ready? Ready in purity, ready in obedience, ready in awareness, and ready in devotion. Because the race is set before us, and the goal is not only to start well, but to finish faithfully. And one day, faith will become sight.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, align my heart with eternity. Remove every weight and every sin that slows my walk with You. Teach me to live in constant readiness for Your coming and in daily awareness of Your presence. Purify my thoughts, strengthen my obedience, and deepen my love for You. Let my life reflect that I belong to You completely. And when You appear, find me faithful, watchful, and full of joy in Your presence. Amen.

โ€œBeloved, now are we the children of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.โ€ (1 John 3:2โ€“3 KJV)

There is a future reality that changes present behavior. John does not describe the return of Christ as a distant idea to admire, but as a living hope that reshapes how we walk today. We are already the children of God, but what we will become has not yet been fully revealed. Yet one truth anchors everything: when He appears, we shall be like Him. That hope is not passive. It produces something in us right now - purification. This is how you recognize the nature of Christ within a person. It is not perfection without struggle, but direction with conviction. A true believer may stumble, but they do not settle. There is something in them that resists sin, grieves over it, and rises again toward holiness. It is like a sheep that falls into mud. It may be stained, but it does not feel at home there. It longs to be clean again. But a different nature is content in filth, comfortable in it, unbothered by it. John draws the line clearly; the hope of seeing Jesus produces a life that pursues purity.

Jesus warned of a generation that would be caught unaware, weighed down with excess, distraction, and intoxication with the present world. Not just physical drunkenness, but spiritual dullness, a life absorbed by comfort, consumption, and careless living. That kind of life does not prepare the heart for His return. It dulls awareness. It lowers discernment. It drifts. That is why Scripture calls us to take heed to ourselves. Not to live anxious, but to live awake. The return of Christ is not meant to create fear in the believer, but urgency in the heart. There is a day coming when opportunity ends, when witnessing stops, when decisions are sealed. That reality should awaken us to live intentionally now, to pray now, to forgive now, to obey now, to share the gospel now.

The world fades, and its desires with it. But the one who does the will of God abides forever. So the question is not only what do you believe about His coming, but what is that belief doing in you right now? Because everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure. And that is the call, not to fear the future, but to let the future shape your present.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the hope of Your coming and the promise that I will see You as You are. Let that hope change the way I live today. Purify my heart, my thoughts, my desires, and my actions. Keep me alert and not spiritually dull. Help me to take heed to my life and walk in holiness, not by fear, but by love for You. Let my life reflect the nature of Christ until the day I see You face to face. Amen.
