+ The Fourth Sunday After Trinity + Our Lord has taught us to be just as merciful and compassionate as He Himself is. But the corruption of the world and of our hearts makes us very unmerciful, impatient & unwilling to endure. True mercy requires suffering, as we have learned from the very cross of Christ. Jesus has shown His divine mercy, willing to endure poverty, humility, suffering, and death to free us from our corruption. By His suffering mercy, we have the promise of glory to come, when we will at last be fully like Him! Until then, we wait eagerly, desiring that glory even as we endure all manner of suffering to show Christ's mercy to others.

+ Sunday June 29, The Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul + The Apostles Peter and Paul gave their lives in martyrdom as a witness to Christ. They proclaimed what was revealed to them, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and that by His resurrection we have salvation, the forgiveness of sins.
This testimony is the rock upon which the Church stands, and upon which she proclaims absolution to all who repent and trust in Christ. This absolution & this Church stand certain even against death itself, for Christ has triumphed over death forever!

+ The First Sunday After Trinity + We're used to thinking that we can understand things by looking at them. In His teachings, Our Lord opens our eyes to see things as they truly are - those things which seems great and mighty in this world are passing away, while salvation is found in what is weak, humble, and lowly. Seeing wealth and blessing, the rich man sets his heart upon them, but the poor beggar Lazarus, seeing only suffering and weakness, yet sets his heart upon a heavenly treasure, and so he joins Abraham, and all the saints of old who longed for a kingdom and a banquet which they could not see. For their faith was in Christ, who humbled Himself to take our weakness and suffering so that we might be comforted and exalted in Him.

+ The Feast of the Holy Trinity + 1700 years ago, Christian bishops from around the world gathered together to settle one critical question: Who is Jesus? Controversy was raging as many were teaching that the Son of God was a created being, & that there was a time before He was created. This struck at the very heart of the Christian faith - that Jesus is the Christ, the true begotten Son of the Living God! To safeguard the faith handed down from the Apostles, and to proclaim the truth about Christ for all time, the bishops gathered at Nicaea in 325 to set down this confession, that Jesus is true God, sharing in the same nature & substance of God the Father. Through Him, the only-begotten Son, we then are adopted in baptism as sons of the Father, reborn in the Spirit, that we may share in not just created things, but in the eternal divine life of this one, holy God - the Father, Son, and holy Spirit.

+ The Feast of Pentecost + Jesus promised His Spirit to His disciples and poured out His Spirit upon the Church at Pentecost! But why, then, do our lives often seem to us so unspiritual? Thanks to the blessed promises of God, we can know that God's Spirit is at work in us, despite our unworthiness. He does not leave us unholy & unrighteous, but renews our hearts in faith, love, wisdom, & peace. The same divine Spirit who descended on Pentecost, and who strengthened the Apostles and martyrs, now comes to us in the Word and the Sacraments, that we too may live as disciples of Christ.

+ Rogate + The Sixth Sunday of Easter +
Alleluia! Christ is risen! He has redeemed us and renewed us through Baptism that we might be His faithful priests in this fallen world. As the priests of old offered sacrifices daily, so we, as Christian priests daily offer the sacrifices of prayer and thanksgiving. We take up this divine labor with confidence in our Lord's promise that whatever we ask in Christ's name, according to His will, He will grant to us. This He has promised because of the great love He has for us in Christ, who has sacrificed Himself to win God's blessed favor for us once for all!
