2026.10.16 葡萄樹

今日讀經: 約翰福音 15:1-8

「我是葡萄樹，你們是枝子；常在我裡面的，我也常在他裡面，這人就多結果子……」 - 約翰福音 15:5

在我結婚之前，我沒有車。我不知道怎麼修車，也不會安裝水管（現在還是不會）。但結婚之後，我忽然可以透過丈夫，使用許多自己原本沒有的資源。

與耶穌聯合也是如此——而且更勝一籌。耶穌把自己比作葡萄樹，說我們就像枝子——與祂緊密相連，並在祂裡面享有豐盛生命的一切福分。

約翰·加爾文曾寫道：藉著基督，所有屬天的恩賜都流向我們。從祂那裡，我們得著生命、公義、聖潔和每一項真實的福分。你想想看！耶穌的喜樂、平安、力量和賞賜都歸給我們。一首古老的聖詩宣告：「我們在基督裡所擁有的神聖恩惠是何等浩大！」

在今天所讀經文的開頭，耶穌稱自己為「真葡萄樹」。除此以外，再沒有別的生命源頭能使我們如此豐盛。離了祂，我們就不能結果子，所以我們需要常住在耶穌裡面。

「常住」是甚麼樣子的？我曾看過一個視頻，叫《如果我們像對待手機一樣對待聖經…》。視頻裡，一個男人早晨一醒來就翻開《聖經》；他刷牙時讀，煎蛋時讀，在跑步機上跑步時也讀，甚至一整天都在不停地查看《聖經》。

我們很明白甚麼叫做與手機「形影不離」，也許住在基督裡也是如此。我們需要隨時隨地，都與祂保持親近。

禱告
主耶穌，我們能與你聯合是何等有福！求你幫助我們在一切所行的事上常在你裡面，使我們能為你多結果子。阿們。

Today Scripture: John 15:1-8

THE VINE

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. . . .” —John 15:5

Before I married, I did not own a car. I did not know how to fix vehicles or install plumbing. (Still don’t.) But with a vow, suddenly I had access to all those riches through my husband.

Being united to Jesus works in a way like that—only better. Jesus describes himself as a vine, and he says we are like branches—deeply connected to him and blessed with all the benefits of life in him.

John Calvin wrote that through Christ all heavenly gifts flow to us. From him we get life, righteousness, holiness, and every true blessing. Imagine! Jesus’ joy, peace, strength, and reward. An old hymn proclaims: “How vast the benefits divine that we in Christ possess!”

At the beginning of our reading for today, Jesus calls himself “the true vine.” There really is no other with whom we can have this flourishing relationship. Apart from him, we cannot bear fruit, so we need to remain in Jesus.

What does “remaining” look like? I saw a short video called “If we treated our Bibles like our phones. . . .” As soon he woke in the morning, a man opened his Bible; he read it as he brushed his teeth, cooked his eggs, and ran on a treadmill. He even kept checking his Bible throughout the day.

We know what it means to “remain” with our phones. Perhaps remaining in Christ looks something like that? We need to stay close with him, all day long.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, how blessed we are to be united in you! Help us to remain in you always, in all we do, that we may bear your fruit. Amen.

2026.10.15 教會全體之首

今日讀經: 歌羅西書 1:15-20

「他也是教會全體之首……」 - 歌羅西書 1:18

我的女兒在愛荷華州德梅因青年交響樂團擔任敲擊樂手。當我們坐下來準備聽音樂會時，熱身的聲音聽起來既刺耳又嘈雜，每位樂手都在調音熱身，各行其是。

接著…噠-噠-噠。指揮示意大家注意，一切都隨之改變了！雜亂變成了音樂，混亂變得井然有序。每件樂器都在統一樂譜的指揮下各得其所。美由此而生。

教會也有許多肢體，許多「樂器」。如果任由我們各行其是，我們自然各吹各的調。我們也可能變得好勝、混亂，常常像「鳴的鑼、響的鈸」一般，沒有愛（《哥林多前書》13:1）。但因為有耶穌作我們的元首、我們的主和救主，我們就能「同心合意」（《羅馬書》12:16）。祂引導我們奏出和諧的樂章。

不過，把耶穌比作指揮還不夠貼切。一支交響樂團沒有指揮，或許還能勉強演奏；但身體沒有頭，一刻也無法存活。頭發送信號，使身體的每一個部位、每一項功能都活躍起來，協調運作。

同樣，耶穌作我們的元首，把祂的生命賜給教會。藉著祂的靈，祂將饒恕、公義、無私和愛傳遞給祂的身體。祂所賜的不只是指引，更是祂自己。

禱告
主耶穌，我們的元首，願你使我們作為你的身體，為你譜寫一曲優美的交響樂。願我們調準自己的生命，始終與你保持和諧。阿們。

Today Scripture: Colossians 1:15-20

HEAD OF THE BODY

He is the head of the body, the church. . . . —Colossians 1:18

My daughter plays percussion for the Des Moines (Iowa) Youth Symphony. As we take our seats for a concert, the warmup sounds like cacophony and chaos. Every musician is doing their own thing as they tune up and warm up.

Then . . . tap-tap-tap. The conductor calls everyone to attention, and everything changes! The mess becomes music. The chaos turns coherent. Every instrument finds its place in the unity of the written score. And beauty results.

The church too has many parts, many “instruments.” Left to ourselves, we naturally do our own thing. We can also be competitive and chaotic, often resembling “a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal,” without love (1 Corinthians 13:1).

But because we have Jesus as our Head, our Lord and Savior, we can “live in harmony with one another” (Romans 12:16). He directs us with his song.

The picture of Jesus as a conductor doesn’t go far enough, though. A symphony can survive without a conductor. But a body can’t survive, even for a moment, without a head. The head sends the signals that animate and orchestrate every part and every function of the body.

In the same way Jesus, our Head, gives his life to his church. By his Spirit, he transmits to his body forgiveness, righteousness, selflessness, and love. What he gives is more than direction; he gives himself.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, our Head, make us, as your body, a beautiful symphony for you. May we tune our lives to be in harmony with you always. Amen.

2026.10.14 好牧人

今日讀經: 約翰福音 10:1-5, 11-15

「他按著名叫自己的羊，把羊領出來。…我是好牧人……」 - 約翰福音 10:3, 14

我們一家曾在納瓦霍國的一個邊境小鎮住了十年。從我們的納瓦霍朋友那裡，我們學到了一些關於放牛和牧羊的知識。我們瞭解到，不同的動物，要用不同的方法帶領。

牛是被趕著走的。人們用狗或馬從後面驚嚇牠們，使牠們朝想要的方向跑。我們在以色列訪問時，也看到類似放山羊的情景。牧羊人不斷向山羊側後方不遠的地方扔小石子，嚇唬牠們，驅使牠們朝牧羊人想要的方向去。而綿羊就不一樣了。綿羊通常跟在後面，綿羊認得牧羊人的聲音。牠們跟隨牧羊人，是因為信任他。

耶穌說祂是好牧人，祂不靠恐嚇或手段驅趕祂的羊。「他按著名字叫自己的羊……羊也跟著他，因為認得他的聲音。」

我們熟悉牧人的聲音嗎？我們怎樣學會辨認它？我們要到耶穌向我們說話的地方——《聖經》——每天花時間聆聽祂。在那裡，我們逐漸熟悉祂的語調和語氣；在那裡，我們學習祂的行事方式，漸漸信靠祂。

這樣，當耶穌帶領我們走進並穿過幽暗的山谷時，即使看不見祂，我們也不懼怕，因為我們知道祂與我們同在。

禱告
好牧人啊，沒有人像你這樣良善。我們跟隨你，信靠你——即使在黑暗之中。求你引導我們始終信靠你。阿們。

Today Scripture: John 10:1-5,11-15

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

“He calls his own sheep by name and leads them. . . . I am the good shepherd. . . .” —John 10:3,14

Our family lived for ten years in a border town of the Navajo Nation. We learned a little about herding sheep and tending cattle from our Navajo friends. We learned that different animals are led differently.

Cattle are driven. Dogs or horses are used to spook them from behind so that they trot where you want them to go. We saw something similar with goats when we visited Israel. The goat herder constantly threw small stones just beyond and to the side of the goats, in order to startle them and drive them in the direction he wanted them to go.

With sheep, it is often different. Sheep generally follow behind. Sheep learn the shepherd’s voice. And they follow the shepherd because they trust the shepherd.

Jesus says he is the good shepherd. He does not use fear or tricks to drive his sheep. “He calls his own sheep by name . . . and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

Do we know our Shepherd’s voice? How do we learn it? We learn Jesus’ voice by going to where he speaks, in the Bible, and spending time listening to him each day. There we grow familiar with his cadence and tones. There we learn his ways and grow to trust him.

Then, when he leads us in and through dark valleys, we will not fear, even when we can’t see him. For we know he is with us.

PRAYER
Good Shepherd, no one is as good as you. We follow you, and we trust you—even when it is dark. Guide us to trust you always. Amen.

2026.10.13 以馬內利

今日讀經: 希伯來書 2:10-18

「人要稱他的名為以馬內利。（以馬內利翻出來就是『神與我們同在』）」- 馬太福音 1:23

第一次世界大戰後，英國士兵從前線歸來，許多人身心飽受創傷。許多人患了彈震症，容貌被毀，傷痕纍纍。在服事這些受傷退伍軍人的牧師中，有一位叫愛德華·希利托（Edward Shillito）。他在 1919 年寫下一首詩，以士兵的視角尋求神，字裡行間儘是沮喪與懷疑：「諸天令我們驚惶，它們太過平靜。……我們的傷口在發炎作痛；那醫治的香膏在哪裡？」

然而，詩中也表明，在看到耶穌——這位以馬內利——的傷痕時，他的盼望和信心開始得以恢復：「唯有神自己的傷痕能對我們的傷痕說話，除了你，沒有一位別神帶有傷痕。」

對於凡是正在受苦的人來說，我們需要仰望耶穌，這位真神，祂來到世間與我們「同在」，並為我們的緣故獻出生命作為至高的祭物。「因他受的鞭傷，我們得醫治」（《以賽亞書》53:5）。《聖經》宣告了這一神聖的奧秘：神並非遠離我們、與我們隔絕，彷彿在千萬里之外。祂乃是「與我們同在」，祂受傷、受辱、肉身被撕裂，「像被人掩面不看的一樣」（《以賽亞書》53:3）——這就是以馬內利。

Today Scripture: Hebrews 2:10-18

IMMANUEL

“They will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). —Matthew 1:23

After the First World War, British soldiers returned from the front lines devastated. Many were shell-shocked, disfigured, wounded, and scarred.

Among the pastors who ministered to those hurting veterans was Edward Shillito. He wrote a poem, in 1919, in which he speaks as a soldier, seeking God. The poem expresses dismay and doubt: “The heavens frighten us; they are too calm. . . . Our wounds are hurting us; where is the balm?”

Yet it shows that in seeing the scars of Jesus, Immanuel, hope and faith can be restored: “To our wounds only God’s wounds can speak, And not a god has wounds, but Thou alone.”

For any of us who is suffering, we need to see Jesus, the one true God who came to be “with us” and who offered his life as the ultimate sacrifice for our sake. “By his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Scripture proclaims this holy mystery: God is not distant from us, sealed off, light years away. He is “with us.” Wounded, abused, with his flesh ripped open, “like one from whom people hide their faces” (53:3)—that’s Immanuel.

What a holy mystery it is that the risen Jesus bears eternal scars on his eternal flesh (John 20:19-29). “He had to be made . . . fully human in every way . . . [to] make atonement for the sins of” us all.

PRAYER
See the scars. Scars of pain. Scars of victory. Scars of Immanuel. “Oh, love, how deep, how broad, how high”! Thank you, Jesus, for becoming “God with us.” Amen.

2026.10.12 多受痛苦的人

今日讀經: 以賽亞書 53:3-5

「他被藐視，被人厭棄，多受痛苦，常經憂患。……他誠然擔當我們的憂患，背負我們的痛苦……」 - 以賽亞書 53:3-4

當我們的心破碎時，甚麼能帶給我們盼望？

五年前，我四十七歲的嫂子因腦幹腫瘤去世。在那六年她逐漸衰弱、失智、接受臨終關懷、承受難以言喻的痛苦的過程中，我一直幫忙照顧她和她年幼的家人。在那樣艱難的時刻，我們許多人可能會想：「耶穌在哪裡？祂真的顧念我們嗎？我們已經無能為力。祂本可以有所作為——卻似乎沒有出手。」

主在一個意想不到的時刻，給了我一份禮物——C.S.路易斯一本童書中的一段話。一個男孩的母親快要死了，男孩向象徵基督的角色阿斯蘭求助。在那次相遇中，阿斯蘭並沒有施行醫治，但他讓男孩看見他的心，甚至流下大顆的淚珠，表明他承受的痛苦與男孩一樣深。我那時正需要這樣的看見。也許你深知悲傷背後的孤獨與可怕，甚至曾懷疑過神是否真的顧念。

在耶穌身上，我們看見了神的眼淚，也看見了神的心腸。耶穌憐憫一位因兒子去世而哀慟的寡婦（《路加福音》7:13），祂在馬利亞的弟兄墓前與她一同哭泣（《約翰福音》11:35）。耶穌對受苦的人滿有溫柔：「壓傷的蘆葦，他不折斷；將殘的燈火，他不吹滅」（《馬太福音》12:20）。耶穌為了我們的緣故，承受了眾人罪孽所引發的一切痛苦和憂傷。應許當祂再來時，要擦去一切的悲哀、哭號和疼痛（《啟示錄》21:4）。

MAN OF SORROWS

A man of suffering, and familiar with pain . . . he took up our pain and bore our suffering. . . . —Isaiah 53:3-4

What gives hope when our hearts break?

Five years ago, my sister-in-law, only 47 years old, died of a brain-stem tumor. I helped to care for her and her young family during six years of decline, dementia, hospice, and devastating pain. At times like that, many of us may wonder, “Where is Jesus? Does he even care? We can do nothing. He could do something—and yet it seems like he stays away.”

The Lord gave me a gift in an unexpected place—a passage in a C. S. Lewis children’s book. A boy’s mother is dying. The boy seeks help from the Christ figure, Aslan. Aslan doesn’t heal in that encounter, but he shows the boy his heart, even great tears, showing that he hurts as much as the boy himself. I needed that insight.

Perhaps you know how lonely and terrible grief is. Perhaps you have wondered if God cares.

In Jesus, we see the tears and the heart of God. Jesus’ heart went out to a grieving widow whose son had died (Luke 7:13). He wept with Mary at her brother’s tomb (John 11:35). Jesus is gentle with the hurting: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not s***f out” (Matthew 12:20). Jesus suffered, for our sake, all of the pain and sorrow caused by everyone’s sin. And he promises to remove all mourning and crying and pain when he comes again (Revelation 21:4).

PRAYER
Lord of bruised, smoldering hearts, thank you for your tears. Thank you also for the promise that our tears won’t last forever. Amen.

2026.10.10 服事者

今日讀經: 路加福音 22:24-27

「我在你們中間如同服事人的。」 - 路加福音 22:27

剛上大學時，有一群大四學生（其中一位是我未來的嫂子）邀請大學校長到他們的宿舍公寓，吃他們親手做的飯，這已令我十分驚訝。更讓我驚訝的是，雖然校長身分尊貴，他竟然答應了。但令我終生難忘的是，用餐結束後，校長堅持要由他來洗碗。

這是一位「老派」校長——我從未見過他不穿西裝打領帶的樣子。然而，他脫下西裝外套，捲起雪白的襯衫袖子，借了一條圍裙，把剩菜殘渣刮進垃圾桶，然後在肥皂水裡把每一個盤子洗乾淨。就在那個廚房裡，他讓我們親眼看見甚麼叫作僕人式的領袖。

神親自——祂比任何大學校長、首席執行官或其他領袖都更偉大——成為了「服事人的那一位」。在耶穌身上，我們看到道成肉身的神屈膝跪下，取了奴僕的姿勢，俯身洗滌那些將要背叛、拒絕並離棄祂的門徒們的雙腳，親自服事他們，為他們洗腳（《約翰福音》13 章）。

耶穌還藉著走向十字架、捨棄自己的生命來拯救我們，來服事我們。因祂所流的寶血，我們得以從罪的債務和咒詛中釋放。

在耶穌對門徒的教導中，我們可以聽到祂對我們的呼召，彷彿在呼喚我們：「你們明白我為你們所做的嗎？……現在，奉我的名去服事他人吧。」

禱告
謙卑的君王，我們敬拜你。你向我們顯明了甚麼是真正的領袖。求你使我們成為像你一樣的僕人。阿們。

Today Scripture: Luke 22:24-27

THE ONE WHO SERVES

“I am among you as one who serves.” —Luke 22:27

When I began attending a university, I was amazed at a group of seniors (one of them my future sister-in-law) who invited the university president to come to a dorm apartment for a meal they had prepared. I was even more amazed that, important as he was, the president said yes. But the thing I’ll never forget is that when the meal was over, the president insisted he be the one to wash the dishes.

This was an “old school” president whom I had never seen apart from his dress suit and tie, but he set aside his suitcoat, rolled up his crisp white dress sleeves, borrowed an apron, and scraped lasagna bits into the garbage. He scrubbed every dish in that sudsy water and gave us all a picture of how a servant-leader acts.

God himself, greater than any university president, chief executive, or other leader, became “one who serves.” In Jesus, God-in-flesh got down on his knees, took the posture of a slave, and held in his hands the feet of his followers, who would betray, reject, and abandon him. He served them, washing their feet (John 13).

Jesus also served us by going to the cross and laying down his own life to save ours. By his shed blood we are freed from the debt and the curse of sin.

In Jesus’ teaching to his disciples, we can hear his call to us, in effect: “Do you understand what I have done for you? . . . Now go in my name and serve others.”

PRAYER
Humble King, we worship you. You have shown us what real leadership is. Make us servants like you, we pray. Amen.

2026.10.09 神的羔羊

今日讀經: 啟示錄 5

「我又看見……寶座之中有羔羊站立，像是被殺過的……」 - 啟示錄 5:6

我家客廳裡有一幅佔了半面牆的大畫，畫中一頭獅子和一隻羔羊並排躺在一起。這是我母親在1973年畫的，那時她有兩個年幼的兒子，而兩個女兒也即將出生。

我常常注意到母親畫中這兩隻動物的姿態。獅子看起來順服於羔羊，羔羊的小腿搭在獅子強壯的前爪上。獅子正視著羔羊，而羔羊則直視著觀眾。

我覺得這幅畫抓住了《聖經》描繪耶穌時的那種神韻。在今天所讀的經文中，耶穌既被稱為獅子，也被稱為羔羊。但其中一個形象明顯佔據主導。耶穌只有一次被稱作「獅子」，卻被多次稱為「羔羊」（《聖經》其他篇章也是如此）。「羔羊」這個形象，正是我們最需要看到的耶穌的樣子。

對於神在舊約時代的子民來說，羔羊的獻祭象徵他們的罪與罪疚得蒙救贖。無辜的祭牲代替有罪的人死。當施洗約翰將耶穌指給眾人看時，他說：「看哪，神的羔羊，除去世人罪孽的！」（《約翰福音》1:29）

在十字架上，我們的救恩並非靠肌肉、牙齒或利爪成就，而是透過一位完美且溫柔的祭牲所流的寶血成就的。

禱告
神的羔羊啊，我們愛你。主耶穌，求你用你的寶血洗淨我們。感謝你那一次獻上、便成全到永遠的犧牲，償還了我們的罪債。奉你的名求，阿們。

Today Scripture: Revelation 5

LAMB OF GOD

I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne. . . . —Revelation 5:6

A large painting in my living room takes up half a wall. It portrays a lion and a lamb lying down together. My mom painted it in 1973, back when she had two baby boys and would soon have a pair of girls too.

I often notice the posture of those two animals my mom painted. The lion looks submissive to the lamb, and the lamb’s little leg rests atop the lion’s mighty forepaw. The lion looks squarely at the lamb, while the lamb looks straight at the viewer.

I think this painting captures something of how Scripture portrays Jesus. Jesus is called both a lion and a lamb in our Bible passage for today. But one image is clearly dominant. Jesus is called “Lion” only once. But there are several references to Jesus as “the Lamb” (and more in other Bible passages). The picture of “the Lamb” is the one we most need to see about Jesus.

For God’s Old Testament people, the sacrifice of a lamb signaled redemption for their sin and guilt. The innocent substitute died in the place of the guilty. When John the Baptist pointed out Jesus to others, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

On the cross, our salvation was not accomplished by muscle or teeth or claws. It was accomplished through the shed blood of a perfect and gentle sacrifice.

PRAYER
O Lamb of God, we love you. Wash us in your precious blood, Lord Jesus. Thank you for your sacrifice once for all to pay the debt of our sin. In your name, Amen.

2026.10.08 生命的糧

今日讀經: 約翰福音 6:26-35, 47-51

「耶穌說：『我就是生命的糧。到我這裡來的，必定不餓……』」 - 約翰福音 6:35

在大衛·邁爾斯所著的《美國的悖論：富足時代的精神飢渴》一書中，他寫道：「我們購買得更多，享受得卻更少。食物更豐富了，營養卻更少了；房子更華麗了，家庭卻更破碎了。我們增加了生命的年歲，卻沒能為年歲增添生命。」

這時耶穌登場了——祂生在伯利恆（意為「糧食之家」），被放在馬槽裡（動物的食槽）。（見《路加福音》2:4-7。）耶穌的一生傳達了這樣一個信息：「你們飢餓，而我就是那糧。我能用我自己滿足你們。」

我們是否真正以耶穌為糧？對一顆飢渴、總覺得得不到滿足的心來說，祂就是生命的糧。

1860 年，兩位探險家——羅伯特·伯克和威廉·威爾斯——出發橫穿澳大利亞。然而，他們在返回途中耗盡了所有補給，試圖靠一種叫「澳洲蘋」的三葉草狀植物維持生命，最終不幸遇難。他們以為澳洲蘋能救命，但顯然他們沒有正確處理這種植物，其中的一種酶導致他們缺乏維生素。他們每天吃下一碗又一碗的澳洲蘋，身體卻越來越虛弱，越來越消瘦，最終走向死亡。

讓我們看看我們生命的「菜單」。我們的工作、簡歷、社交日程、娛樂選擇、手機，甚至服事工作，似乎都能填補某種飢渴，但如果沒有耶穌，這一切最終仍只剩空虛。《以賽亞書》55章2節問道：「你們為何花錢買那不足為食物的呢？」唯有耶穌，這生命的糧，能滿足我們靈魂的飢渴。

Today Scripture: John 6:26-35, 47-51

BREAD OF LIFE

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. . . .” —John 6:35

In a book titled The American Paradox: Spiritual Hunger in an Age of Plenty, David Meyers wrote: “We buy more, but enjoy it less. We have more food and less nutrition; fancier houses, but broken homes. We have added years to life, not life to years.”

Enter Jesus, the one who was born in Bethlehem (“house of bread”) and was laid in a manger (a food trough for animals). (See Luke 2:4-7.) Jesus’ life gave this message: “You are hungry. I am bread. I can satisfy you with myself.”

Are we feeding on Jesus? He is the bread of life for gnawing, hungry souls.

In 1860, two explorers—Robert Burke and William Wills— set out to cross Australia. They died on their way back, however, after using up all their supplies and trying to survive on nardoo, a clover-like plant.

They thought nardoo could save them. But apparently they failed to prepare it properly, and an enzyme in it gave them a vitamin deficiency. They ate bowlfuls of nardoo each day, but they grew weaker and thinner and died.

Let’s look at the menu of our lives. Our jobs, resumes, social calendars, entertainment options, phones, and even ministries can seem to fill a hunger, but without Jesus it all ends in emptiness. Isaiah 55:2 asks, “Why spend your money on what is not bread?” Only Jesus, the bread of life, can satisfy the hunger of our souls.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us yourself as the bread of life we need every day. Fill us, we pray, and help us to trust you for all our needs. In your name, Amen.

2026.10.07 拯救者

今日讀經: 希伯來書 2:14-15

「必有一位救主從錫安出來……」 - 羅馬書 11:26

他也照樣親自成了血肉之體，特要藉著死敗壞那掌死權的……（《希伯來書》2:14）

我兒子大衛三歲時，看見一張令他著迷的圖片。他會趴在地板上，對著它看個不停。那是歐洲一座古老祭壇上木雕的照片，雕刻描繪的是耶穌踢開死亡之門的情景。

一個暴風雨的夜晚，停電了。孩子們上床已經有一會兒了，但現在沒有了小夜燈。屋裡漆黑一片，黑得嚇人。我去查看他們的情況，在門外聽著。我聽見大衛在唱歌。他顯然只記得兩句詞，翻來覆去地唱：「我要歡欣，我要歡欣，在其中喜樂，在其中喜樂……」

我聽了一會兒，然後推門進去。但我沒走幾步，大衛就在床上坐直了身子說：「媽媽，給我看那張照片——那張踢開門的照片。」他躺在那個黑暗的地方時，顯然一直在想著耶穌的木雕。我想，正是耶穌的那個形象——那位踢開死亡之門、比我們任何恐懼都更強大的拯救者——促使大衛在黑夜中唱起了歌。

反過來，大衛倒給我上了一課。當我們身處黑暗和可怕的境地時，如果我們記得耶穌——記得祂是誰，以及祂以拯救之愛勝過了哪些權勢——我們仍然可以歌唱。

禱告
耶穌，感謝你將我們從罪惡、死亡和每一種幽暗的恐懼中拯救出來。求你作我們黑夜中的樂歌。阿們。

Today Scripture: Hebrews 2:14-15

DELIVERER

“The deliverer will come. . . .” —Romans 11:26 He . . . shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death . . . —Hebrews 2:14

My son David, at age 3, found a picture that captivated him. He’d bend over it on the floor and look, and look. The picture was of a wood carving from an old altar in Europe. The carving showed Jesus kicking down the gate of death.

One night during a storm, the power went out. The boys had been in bed for a while, but now there was no nightlight. It was dark. Scary dark. I checked on them, listening outside the door. I heard David singing. He apparently knew only two phrases and kept singing them over and over: “I will rejoice, I will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it. . . .”

I listened a bit and then opened the door to go in. But before I got far, David sat upright in his bed and said, “Show me the picture, Mommy— the kickin’-down- the-door picture.” He had obviously been thinking about the Jesus carving as he lay in that dark place. And I think that image of Jesus—the deliverer kicking down the door of death and mightier than any of our fears—prompted David to sing his song in the night.

David preached a sermon to my heart. When we are in a dark and scary place, we can still sing songs if we remember Jesus—who he is and what powers he has overcome in his saving love for us.

PRAYER
Jesus, thank you for delivering us from sin and death—and from every dark fear. Be our song in the night. Amen.
