Assumption Church is a Roman Catholic parish located in the River North area of Chicago. Founded in 1881 to minister to the needs of Italian immigrants who had settled in the area, Assumption now serves a diverse community of neighborhood residents, downtown workers, hi

storic parishioners, tourists, and intentional parishioners from all over the Chicago area who have come to appreciate our beautiful worship space, friendly atmosphere, and uplifting liturgies. From the beginning Assumption has been staffed by the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, a religious community founded in Italy in the thirteenth century. The title "Assumption" refers to the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother of God, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. The large stained glass window above the altar commemorates this event. It is patterned after a number of famous paintings including El Greco's The Assumption of the Virgin which is part of the collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Here is last week's answer! Well done, everyone!

It is the Ambo.

The word "ambo" comes from a Greek word meaning "step" or "elevation." Since the 4th century Christians were accustomed to using a raised platform during Mass to chant or read the Epistle (typically a reading from St. Paul's letters) and Gospel. Some historians believe it is connected to the platform used by Jewish rabbis to read the scriptures before the people. Spiritually it is derived from the action of Jesus when he "went up on the mountain, and ... opened his mouth and taught them" (Matthew 5:1,2). ()

The answer to our first is:

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐍

The Paten is a small, shallow plate or disc of precious metal upon which the Eucharist is offered to God during Mass. The word "paten" comes from the Latin word patina and the Greek patanΔ“, which mean shallow pan or plate.

(In all fairness, you probably would never see this item up close unless you attend Daily Mass, or if you are a Server or Eucharistic Minister, and even then may not have noticed how beautiful it is. So, we made the first test a bit of a tough one!)
