The Mission of Our Lady of the Angels establishes a Catholic presence in the West Humboldt Park area on Chicago’s west side. This area is presently one of the poorest neighborhoods in the City of Chicago. The purpose of the Mission is twofold: to assist the materially poor and to share the treasure of our Catholic Faith. ASSISTANCE TO THE MATERIALLY POOR INCLUDES:
-Food Pantry- The Mission curre

ntly provides food to about 700 families each month.
-Distribution of Clothing/ Household Goods- Gently used clothing as well as furniture and household goods are distributed at set times as well as for emergencies.
-Emergency Assistance- The Mission provides emergency food, material assistance, and referencing to other agencies as requested.
-Afterschool Programming- Approximately 900 youth participate in a variety of afterschool, evening and summers programs, many of which are in partnership with the YMCA and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
-Senior Citizens Programming- Each week the Mission hosts between 30-40 seniors for a program which includes: exercise, computer classes, a Bible study, and lunch.
-Community Dinners- The Mission’s newest outreach strives to provide a safe, healthy, and wholesome environment for the families in our neighborhood. The community dinners give the neighbors an opportunity to pray, enjoy a nutritious meal, and foster healthy family and community relationships based on Christian values.
-Special Events- The Mission hosts several special events each year including block parties, a Thanksgiving party, and a Christmas party. OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE THE TREASURES OF OUR FAITH INCLUDE:
-Retreats- Using the former convent building, the Mission provides space for various retreat opportunities
-Street Evangelization- During the summer we regularly close the street to host block parties and provide a safe, supervised play area for the children in the neighborhood. During these times, we have the opportunity to share the treasures of our faith.
-Preaching- Fr. Bob and the Franciscans of the Eucharist go out to speak at parishes and other Catholic/ Christian groups regularly.
-Summer Bible Camps- The Mission hosts Bible camps for the neighborhood children several weeks every summer.
-Eucharistic Adoration- Building to Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, the Mission hosts times for volunteers (and soon our neighbors) to join us in prayer to and with our Eucharistic Lord. We believe if you can’t see Jesus in the Eucharist, you can’t see Him in the poor.

Congratulations to Team OLA’s Chicago 13.1 HALF-MARATHON TEAM on an incredible race this past Sunday!! Sr. Stephanie and Sr. Anna ran alongside an amazing team, and altogether the half marathon team raised just over $16,000 to help support the beautiful work we do at Mission OLA!!

Pope Leo made another appearance at the official Team OLA cheer station, and once again, we were touched and humbled by how many runners stopped by for high fives, prayers, and selfies with the pope. To see ALL SIX Pope Leo cutouts in action, be sure to come to our Chicago Marathon cheer station at mile 14 on race day in October!

Over 200 runners and running the full marathon and fundraising to support the Mission. So far, the full marathon team has raised an amazing $160,000, but they still have a ways to go to meet their goal! You can support Team OLA 2026 by making a donation at

We are excited to share that construction work has officially started on the renovation project at St. Hyacinth’s Convent!

All salvageable furniture that was scattered about the building has been moved out, brand new windows are in the process of being installed throughout the building, and we are ready to begin filling in a very problematic ramp in the basement that had led to serious flooding issues. The building plans are in their final stages of being revised before we are ready to go to permit and continue on with the rest of the project.

We also have a brand new website where you can follow the project’s progress:
https://www.fechicago.org/projects/hyacinthproject

A big THANK YOU to all those who have supported this project and are helping us to make this new Formation House a reality! The Church asks religious communities to establish separate houses of formation for young members entering the community as soon as it becomes possible for them to do so - as a young community, we are finally ready to take this step and establish a formation house for our women’s branch, and so are renovating St. Hyacinth’s convent to meet this important need. If you’d like to get involved or help support the project, pelase visit https://www.fechicago.org/donate or email [email protected]

This year on Holy Thursday, we hosted a beautiful Altar of Repose in honor of the Year of St. Francis. The church was open for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 8 pm to 11 pm, and over that time we welcomed nearly 200 visitors who came to spend some time keeping vigil with Jesus. We had a beautiful mix of neighborhood families, pantry patrons, volunteers, benefactors, friends of the community, and people who simply heard we were open and wanted to stop by. Special thanks to our friend who provided the beautiful flowers and helped to decorate the altar and to the team of pantry volunteers who braved the wind and rain to welcome people into the church and help es**rt guests to and from the parking lots. This was truly a special night for all involved!

On March 28th, we hosted our 3rd large women’s retreat on the theme: Mary and the Mystery of Our Identity. 200 women joined us from all over the Chicagoland area and beyond for a wonderful day of prayer, reflection, fellowship, and encouragement. The day included Mass, talks by sisters, Eucharistic Adoration, time for personal prayer, small groups, one-on-one spiritual conversations with sisters, opportunities for praying with a prayer team and receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, and the beloved lunch-time panel on prayer with the sisters. We were once again blown away by the incredibly powerful way the Lord was at work in the retreat and in the lives of all those who came! Thanks to all who helped make the day possible, especially our team of priests who came for confessions and Notre Dame in Clarendon Hill’s Fit Shepherds men’s group who came to help serve in the background. Enjoy these beautiful pictures shared with us by our friend and very talented photographer, Devin Rosa You can check out more of his work or get in touch with him here: https://unscriptedphotographers.com/devsflickss

Just ONE MORE WEEK until Holy Thursday and OLA's first Altar of Repose in more than 30 years!

To celebrate Holy Thursday and the jubilee year of St. Francis, Mission of Our Lady of the Angels will have an altar of repose open for visiting from 8 pm to 11 pm on Holy Thursday, April 2.

An altar of repose is a separate side altar where the Blessed Sacrament is kept on the evening of Holy Thursday. The altar is oftentimes decorated with plants to help us remember Jesus' agony in the garden, which happened on Holy Thursday night. We are invited to remember Jesus' words to Peter, James, and John, "Remain here and keep watch with me" by spending time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for several hours on Holy Thursday night.

It is also tradition to travel to different churches on Holy Thursday to visit altars of repose. Thus, Mission OLA's altar of repose will be open for visitation from 8 pm to 11 pm on April 2 (Holy Thursday)!

OLA also qualifies as a Franciscan church/ holy site for indulgence associated with the jubilee year of St. Francis! Holy Thursday is a great time to stop by. Visit https://www.vaticannews.va/en/vatican-city/news/2026-01/year-saint-francis-indulgence-assisi.html to learn more about this special year and the conditions for receiving an indulgence!
