S’lichot-the formal beginning of the High Holy Day period.
on September 5 at 8:00 pm.

S’lichot at KAM Isaiah Israel includes study, music, and prayer. First, I will teach on the meaning of the key High Holy Day text, Avinu Malkeinu; and our choir—joined by singers from Congregation Shir Tikvah in Homewood—will present several settings of the song. After a special dessert reception, we will gather in the sanctuary for a beautiful late-night service, adorned by the voices of our choir.

We will also transfer our Torah scrolls to their special white mantles.

Jews have, for thousands of years, worn white on Yom Kippur (PT Rosh Hashanah 1:3). In contrast to the black shrouds reserved for mourning, white has been understood as a color of celebration and joy (see, for instance, BT Yoma 39b). The prophet Isaiah reminds us that white is the color of purity and forgiveness (see Isaiah 1:18). And the customary burial shroud is white not because it is a somber color but rather because it is equally available to all (see BT Mo’ed Katan 27b = Ketubot 8b). The white clothes of Yom Kippur reflect our unity as a sacred community, committed to the purpose of self-reflection and expressing the gratitude we feel for the opportunity to pray and repent.



To dress our Torah scrolls in white is a much newer custom. Practiced for only the past three centuries, it has nevertheless become a mainstay of Ashkenazi tradition. The reasons have never been stated. We can speculate that when we gaze upon the Torah scrolls, we yearn to see ourselves reflected there. The Torah is one of us, alive in our midst, and it accompanies us on this journey of the soul.
