The concept of SANKOFA is derived from King Adinkera of the Akan people of West Afrika. SANKOFA literally translated means "it is not taboo to go back & fetch what you forgot". We should reach back & gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. What we have lost, forgotten, or forgone can be reclaimed, revived, preserved & perpetuated. Visually & symbolically "Sankofa" is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth.

FROM PASTOR GRANT: Heartsick today as we take in the news of the mass shooting at "Mother Emmanuel" African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, SC. I am asking that Greater Englewood Parish UMC pause for a moment of prayer at 12pm. To my AME church family Pastor Kevin Pastor Marlan and many others that I cherish know that we are in solidarity with you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayers.
P.S. there is a prayer vigil at Greater Institutional AME at 78 & Indiana at 12Noon
