Greater Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church started as a mission doing the work of the Lord in 1969. We toiled tirelessly, and in 1970, we felt the call to organize into a church. A meeting was called, and the motion to organize the church and to elect Reverend Andrew Kelly as Pastor was established. Church and Pastor J.P. Matthew M.B. Church proceeded to assist in the organization of the church.
Our first church home was located at 1300 South Keeler Ave. Our first members and officers were: Mother Charlotte Kelly, Sis Ruth Key, Secretary & Treasurer; Sis. Luella Jones, Usher and Musician; Deacon Joseph Kelly, Darryl Kelly, Choir Director and Deacon Roy Cage, Chairman of the Deacon Board. As the membership grew, it was evident that we needed a larger facility. We moved to our second home at 1533 S. Pulaski Road. God blessed us at that location for many years and brought a lot of souls to Christ. Again, we prospered and grew in need of a church to meet the growth. Pastor Kelly, along with Deacon Curtis Kelly, Chairman and the deacons, after much prayer and searching, sought out to find another location. In 1994, we moved into our present location at 3245 West Chicago Avenue. During that time, Rev. Kelly appointed Rev. Theodore Williams as the Asst. Pastor along with Brother Eddie Bell and Brother Norman Graham as the Trustees. Our organizing pastor, Rev. Andrew Kelly, after completion of his Christian duties on earth, went on to be with the Lord on June 3, 2005.
