Church History
Holiness is The Way Gospel Temple, COGIC was started in the basement of Elder Wendell Mann, 9255 S. In December 1973, we moved into our present location, 8210 S. In November 1985, we united with the Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Eleazar Lenox, State Bishop of Southern Illinois Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. October 9, 1994, the enemy tried to destroy the phy
sical church (building) by the way of fire. But Godโs love for Holiness did not let the enemy touch the sanctuary part of the building. Damage was done to various parts of the church, but there was no water or smoke damage where the members came together to worship. The Lord Godโs dedicated members who believe that nothing is impossible with God, persevered and kept hope alive. What the enemy meant for bad, God meant it for good. What was thought to be a curse, turned out to be a blessing; as in Number 22:12b - And God said to Balaamโฆ. thou shalt not curse the people, for they are blessed. Elder Mann pastored Holiness for 23 years, resigned and relocated to another state. Assistant Pastor, Henry L. stepped in as Senior Pastor, providing the church with spiritual leadership and biblical teaching from the Word of God. On May 19, 1996, Pastor Henry Sutton, was officially installed as Senior Pastor of Holiness is the Way Gospel Temple by Bishop John Cobb, Prelate. Under the leadership of Pastor Sutton (for the past 27 years) the church has grown both spiritually and financially. In July 2008, Pastor Sutton was appointed Superintendent of the New Haven District. In May 2011, he received his Doctoral Degree in Theology. Pastor Sutton was also honored to have a street named after him, Dr. Henry L. Sutton Way. In December 2007 - 2009, the enemy tried to block Godโs blessing; but God did it again and defeated that old enemy. On April 21, 2011, with the guidance of the Lord through the vision of Pastor Sutton, Holiness is the Way opened a 54-unit Senior Living Center adjacent to the church property. As we celebrate our 50th year in ministry, we give many thanks to Evangelist Alberta Moore, as she has been there since the beginning. Church Motto
And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness. ~ Isaiah 35:8
Dr. Henry L. and the Ministerial Staff are praying, hoping, and putting forth all their efforts, that all people would be saved and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, as it is said in the book of Act 2:4. God loves us all, and gave his son Jesus (John 3:16), who surrendered his life to save man. Therefore, man should surrender his life to follow him. Order of Weekly Services
