Joke :
“This pastor decided to skip church one Sunday morning and go play golf. He told his assistant he wasn't feeling well. He drove to a golf course in another city, so nobody would know him.
He teed off on the first hole. A huge gust of wind caught his ball, carried it an extra hundred yards and dropped it right in the hole, for a 450-yard hole in one. An angel looked at God and said "What'd you do that for?" God smiled and said "Who's he going to tell?"
The King Is Coming “
Matthew 21:6-11 KJV
“And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
[7] And brought the ass, and the c**t, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
[8] And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
[9] And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
[10] And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
[11] And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.”
A king is someone who has “chief authority over a country and people.”
It’s what the current president wants to be.
But there is no king like Jesus.
This event in our text before us today is where we learned about Palm Sunday.
Today we celebrate “Palm Sunday “
It’s the first day of Holy Week
And the Sunday before Easter, commemorating Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Palm branches were used during major religious festivals as a sign of joy.
This showed thankfulness and worship for God’s provision.
On this Sunday we wear small crosses made from palm trees.
Remembering how Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
It was triumphant because Jesus was publicly recognized and welcomed as the promised King , yet he came in a humble and unexpected way.
This event occurred five days before his death.
This wasn’t his first visit to Jerusalem.
But this time it would be different.
He was going there to suffer and die.
To pay the penalty for sin.
He went there to pay a debt he did not owe.
Because we owed a debt we could not pay.
His entry was very humble.
No trumpet sounded for him.
No chariots of State.
No sirens, or police es**rt.
Palm Sunday reminds us you can be with Jesus on Sunday
And against him on Friday.
It also reminds us that Friday is coming.
The provision that was made for him was very poor and ordinary.
2 Corinthians 8:9 says:
“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”
He sent two of his disciples to go and bring a ass and her c**t to him.
It was the choice of transportation for travel in those days .
Horse’s were kept only by the great, and were used for war.
But Jesus rides an animal that’s a symbol of quietness, humility, and good will.
“It reveals what kind of King Jesus is.
He came in meekness and lowliness.
He came not for war, but for peace, establishing peace between God and us (Acts 10:36; Colossians 1:20).”
It is here that we begin to see the end of his earthly and the beginning of his eternal reign.
He died so that we could live.
That’s love.
What a sacrifice.
Isaiah 53:3 tells us what he was willing to go through for us.
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
He had nothing of this worlds goods other than what was lent or given to him.
Yet he was the king.
“He had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.
He had no medicines, yet He healed the sick.
He had no castle, yet they called Him Lord.
He had no army, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.”
He told Pilate in John 18:36
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”
John 18:37 goes on to say:
“ Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
Dr.Tony Evans said that” truth can be defined as an absolute standard by which reality is measured.”
In other words “it's God's point of view on any subject.”
What made his entry into Jerusalem triumphal was that it had been
• Number 1
“prophesied.”
The word “ prophecy “ means,
“the foretelling, or prediction of what is to come”
It had been foretold , and “predicted “ that Jesus would come.
Verse 5 says:
[5] “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a c**t the foal of an ass.”
Who is Sion?
It’s the people of Jerusalem or God’s people.
Christ isn’t just any king .
He’s a sovereign king.
He has all power in heaven and on earth.
Yet he is meek and lowly.
His coming in our text is not like earthly kings.
When they come something great and magnificent Is expected.
But he came in meekness.
And not in majesty.
He is easy to access.
No secret service around him!
You don’t have to go through anybody to talk to him.
He’s just a prayer away.
The Bible says in the eleventh chapter of Matthew
His yoke is easy.
And his burden is light.
“A yoke was a wooden beam placed on oxen so they could pull together.
Spiritually, it represents:
• Guidance
• Responsibility
• Being joined to a teacher or way of life
Life still has challenges, but Jesus helps carry them.
Sin carries the weight of guilt, fear.
Trying to “earn” righteousness is lifted.
You don’t have to carry everything alone anymore because you have a relationship over religion.
You Rest instead of constant struggle.
Here we see the prophecy of Zachariah being fulfilled five hundred years later.
Isn’t it good that the word of God shall go forth, and not come back void.
That’s what Isaiah 55:11 says:
[11] “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
To prosper is to “make successful or fortunate”
His word will accomplish what he intended it to do.
Jesus said in Matthew 24:35 KJV
[35] “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
We also see number 2
•The “ provision “ that was made for the coming of the king.
A king has complete authority over a country or the people.
And when he comes “provision “ was made to receive him.
The word “ provision “ means: means supplying what is needed.
• It’s about the resources themselves
• Food, money, help, protection, etc.
• Think:
“God will provide” He gives what you need”
We know that Jesus is coming but, are we making “provision?”
We need money to operate the church.
Are you giving biblically?
You can give but is it biblical?
Jesus instructed them ahead of time what he needed to make his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
He told them to go into the village, and they would find an ass tied, and a c**t with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
How many of us were tied up?
Wrapped up? And living in sin?
But the Lord told the devil.
Loose them.
And let them go I have need of them!
He told the disciples in Matthew 21:3 if you have any problems
“And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.”
I like His authority.
That’s what we should tell the world when they want us to still hang out with them and do ungodly things.
Tell them the Lord has need of me and He’s set me free. When the Lord speaks Satan has to let us go!
The church is more than just a building.
It’s a called out body of believers.
Many of us as Pastors.
Tell the folks every Sunday what the church needs in order to function.
We’re here to make disciples of men
But most ignore us.
What I love about these disciples.
They did what Jesus said.
That’s what it says in verse 6
My question on the floor today is.
When will the church, do what Jesus said?
They were told to go and take somebody else’s animal.
We’re told in Gospel of Luke 14:23 (KJV):
“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”
“Highways are main roads, public places where many people travel
• Byways (or hedges) are side roads, hidden places, outskirts where overlooked people are
Together, it means:
Go everywhere—both obvious places and forgotten ones and compel them to come to Jesus.
How could Jesus tell them to take someone’s animal!
I’ll tell you how!
Psalm 24:1 KJV says:
[1] “The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
It all belongs to the Lord!
That’s why He could tell them the Lord has need of them.
We are to be a community church
Why?
Because the Lord have need of them.
Salvation is free.
But ministry is costly.
We ask folk to come to church.
Not just unsaved folk.
But church folk.
Why?
Because the Lord has need of them.
It’s easy to look at these disciples and marvel at their faith.
But where is your faith?
What preparation are you making for his return?
Look at what they did in verses 7-8
“And brought the ass, and the c**t, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
[8] And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.”
Watch this.
They were willing to give whatever was necessary to receive Him when He came.
They spared no expense!
•My third word is similar to my second.
And that word is “ prepare.”
To “ prepare “ is “ to put in proper condition or readiness. “
In other words “ get things set for what’s coming.
Say ready and you won’t have to get ready.
I remember when I worked for the City of Chicago we would receive a phone call to notify us that the Commissioner of our department might give us a visit.
As a result of that information we would prepare for his coming.
And everyone would be in position. We know Jesus is coming but are we witnessing?
Are we having that necessary conversation with our friends and love ones?
Are we asking them if they are saved?
God has made “ provision “ for us through Jesus to go to heaven.
But, how prepared are you to meet Him when He comes?
They made “ provision “ for his coming.
But they also needed to be “prepared” when he came.
You can give your tithes.
You can come to church.
But are your affairs in order?
Is your heart fixed, and your mind made up?
The bottom line is, are you saved?
Some folk think they are saved.
But they are not.
I say that because a tree represents the fruit it bears.
They base their salvation on works.
“ I never miss a Sunday. “
Neither does the devil!
“I try to keep the 10 commandments. “
“ I don’t bother anybody. “
“I pay my tithes, and give an offering. “
But, Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
[9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
We see that “ provision “ was made.
And their hearts were “ prepared ” to receive him.
You can see this in verse 9
“And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”
They had waited five hundred years for this day.
But truth be told many didn’t understand he didn’t come to set up an earthly kingdom.
•This tells me we must number 4
Learn to be “patient “ We have to learn how to wait n the Lord.
It’s alright to have a zeal for God but let it be according to knowledge.
A few years ago my youngest daughter car wouldn’t start.
She was leaving school with the girls.
And she called us for help.
We told her to call AAA and they would jump start the car or tow it to the service center .
So my wife and I decided to go to the school just in case they needed a ride if the car needed to be towed.
I noticed when we arrived how peaceful everyone was
Why were they so peaceful?
They knew that help was on the way!
Some are living with conditions that will never change in this life .
They are in wheelchairs.
They’ve been diagnosed With a terminal illness.
But be “ patient!”
Help is on the way!
His grace is sufficient!
The king is coming!
•That’s where my 5th and last word comes in.
And it’s “ praise. “
We “ worship “God for who He is!
But we “ praise” Him for what he has done.
God has made all the necessary
“ provisions” for us to go to heaven through Jesus.
He’s the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!
The one who will wipe away every tear from our eyes.
All sickness and pain will be over.
When you are “ prepared “
Your heart is fixed.
And your mind is made up.
You’re ready when he or death comes.
Whichever comes first.
You’re positioned to say “ for God I'll live.
And for God I’ll die.”
When your heart is fixed, and your mind is made up.
You’ll sho s***f get your “praise” on when he comes.
Their “praise” was so strong when He came they said in verse 10
“Who is this?”
But for those who didn’t know verse 11 says:
“This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.”
The “praise “ was so strong Luke 19:39 says:
“And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.”
In other words they are making too much noise!
But I love what Jesus said in Luke 19:40 KJV
“And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
I might get in trouble for this.
But there were some in the crowd that wasn’t going to let no rocks cry of.
As I close.
I would Like to believe in my sanctified imagination
That blind Bartimaeus was there.
Saying “ thank you Lord! I was once blind, but now I see.”
I’d like to believe that Mary Magdalene was their.
She was possessed with 7 devils
I believe she would have cried out “ thank you Lord for setting me free.”
The woman with the issue of blood for 12 long year’s was there.
She would cry out “I was sick, and couldn’t get well.
But he healed my body, and I got a story to tell!”
When He comes again.
And if we’re alive, we will be crying out.
He’s king of kings!
He’s Lord of Lords!
He’s the great I AM!
He’s coming church!
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 KJV
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
[52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
The old song writer said:
“When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing it will be!
When we all see Jesus
we’ll sing and shout victory!”
He’s coming church!
It may be morning!
It may be at noon time!
It may be late at night!
But He’s coming again!
Until then!
Believe the “ prophecy!”
Thank Him for His “provision! “
“Prepare “ for him in your heart!
Be “ patient!”
And “ praise “ him now and when he comes!
If my choir was here I’d want to hear today.
“Oh, I want to see Him, look upon his face,
There to sing forever of His saving grace,
On the streets of glory let me lift my voice
Cares all pass, home at last, ever to rejoice.”
