THE COMFORT OF FORGIVENESS - JUNE 2, 2026

Proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for. . . .
Isaiah 40:2

God’s people had ignored his law and had closed their ears to the words of his prophets. As a consequence, the people were taken into captivity and exile. Because they would not listen to the voice of grace, they heard the crack of the whip of discipline.

But the same God who disciplines his people restores them by his mercy. God called Isaiah to speak tenderly and with assurance to his exiled people, proclaiming that their time of captivity was over and that their sins were forgiven. What a comforting message!

Because God loves his people, he disciplines them. And along with disciplining his people, God also forgives them. God forgives his people, and he also restores them.

There is no remedy for guilt except in God's forgiveness. No medicine can calm a heart tormented by guilt. No therapy can stifle the desperate cries of a conscience plagued with remorse for wrongdoing. Only God’s forgiveness can lift the heavy burden that crushes us.

Have you been forgiven by God? Do you enjoy the peace that “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7)?

Now is the time of grace. If your heart weighs heavy with sin, now is the opportune time to turn to God in repentance and seek his forgiveness.

Lord God, speak to our hearts with your restoring mercy. Lift the weight of our guilt, forgive us, and lead us from discipline to renewal, bringing the peace that only you can give. In Jesus, Amen.

A DROP IN THE BUCKET - JUNE 1, 2026

Isaiah 40 reminds us that while nations seem powerful and problems feel overwhelming, they are nothing before God, who looks with favor on the humble heart that trusts Him.

“Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust” (Isaiah 40:15).

The scope of the world’s problems is monumental. Who can begin to grasp the meaning of trillions of dollars of national debt or comprehend the challenges faced by corporations with billions of dollars of assets and countless decisions? As individuals, we can seem insignificant—powerless to make a difference.

But God has a different perspective. To Him, even the largest nations are nothing but “dust,” just “a drop from a bucket.” Their power is temporary at best.

God isn’t worried about economic issues, for He controls all resources: “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine” (Haggai 2:8). He is infinitely larger than any person, nation, or problem. By speaking a word, He created the whole universe!

But the Bible reveals something that does move the Lord: people with humble hearts. He told Isaiah, “This is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word” (Isaiah 66:2).

God looks for people who are not afraid, but who trust Him, have faith, serve Him, love His Word, desire a personal relationship with Him, seek first His Kingdom, and are committed to reaching lost souls and impacting the nations with the Gospel.

As you face life’s challenges, don’t feel afraid or insignificant. Focus on Almighty God! Let Him give you His vision for the world and reveal how you can make a difference.

HEAVENLY THOUGHTS - MAY 31, 2026

“You have heard that it was said. . . . But I tell you. . . .”
Matthew 5:21-22
,
In this passage from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, our Lord cites several references from the Old Testament Law, such as “Do not murder,” “Do not commit adultery,” and so on. Then he adds his own divine wisdom on the deeper meanings of those laws, insisting that even our thoughts and motives are subject to the Law’s commands. So if we think about killing someone, or committing adultery, or any other sin, we have actually committed that sin. Ouch!

Jesus’ main message here is about life in the kingdom of God. He shows us that kingdom living goes beyond simply following God’s law. In the kingdom of God, even our thoughts must be pure, good, and truthful.

Now, if we are saved in Christ, our sinful thoughts certainly won’t change that. Similarly in some ways, we can say that people do not go to prison for thinking of murder. So does it really matter if we revel in sinful thinking?

It does matter. We are saved so that we will become more fitting, effective agents in God’s kingdom. When our thoughts align with Christ’s, we gain power and understanding into the ways of God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, more and more of our mind can become like the mind of Christ. And if our mind is like Christ’s, we will share in his compassion, confidence, hope, and power.

Let the mind of Christ grow effectively in you.

Lord Jesus, make us effective servants in your kingdom. May even our thoughts and desires be worthy of you. Amen.

A PLACE TO RUN - MAY 30, 2026

A sanctuary is often defined as a sacred place. Some church members will refer to the worship building or the area around the altar as the sanctuary. But the word has also been defined as a place of safety, a refuge for someone seeking protection.

One of those original meanings for the word sanctuary appears in Numbers 34–35, where God establishes both territorial boundaries and cities of refuge for His people as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. Numbers 34 meticulously outlines Israel’s borders. These were divine borders, defining where God’s people belonged. The detailed tribal allotments ensured every family had their place in the covenant community. But God’s justice system required more than territorial boundaries—it needed places where mercy could operate alongside justice. God commanded Moses: “Select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee” (35:11). This wasn’t about protecting criminals but ensuring justice for those who unintentionally caused death.

The cities of refuge provided crucial protection: “They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly” (35:12). Six cities—three on each side of the Jordan—offered sanctuary until proper investigation could determine guilt or innocence.

These cities represented God’s heart for both justice and mercy. The guilty faced consequences, but the innocent received protection. The high priest’s death would eventually free even those guilty of accidental killing (35:25), pointing toward ultimate redemption. In Jesus, we see the ultimate fulfillment of this idea. He becomes our refuge, not just from earthly consequences but from the judgment our sins deserve.

What a blessing it is, Lord, to take refuge in You! You are our sanctuary, our safe place. You not only provided salvation but know us and protect us and guide us each day. Thank you.

FIGHT THE GOOD MENTAL FIGHT - MAY 29, 2026

I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin. . . .
Romans 7:22-23

It is hard to overstate how much our minds are like battlefields. This is true for all believers in Christ, including the apostle Paul, who describes his own struggles in our text for today.

In this passage, Paul says that one set of thoughts in his mind is turned toward God and aims to do good. The other set of thoughts, however, is turned toward evil and wants to sin. Paul thanks God in Christ that he is indeed saved. But in the very next verse, he recognizes that he is still of two minds; he is a slave to God’s law at the same time that he is a slave to sin. In verse 24, Paul seems to despair of living in this sort of spiritual duplicity. “What a wretched man I am!” he says.

In this way, Paul expresses the frustrating way the Christian life goes—we are pulled one way and tugged the other by opposing powers within us. Though we are truly and irrevocably saved through the blood of Jesus Christ, we are at the same time slaves to our sinful old selves.

Thus, we are in constant battle. Who will rule our hearts and minds today? Who will rule our thinking about our work, marriage, or politics? The inner thoughts that we barely even notice may really be spiritual combat.

Though the battle rages on, we can ultimately say, with Paul, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

O God, you have freed us from the curse of sin and death. But we need your power in our minds each day. Guide us to live by your Spirit. Amen.

If you feel disconnected from God today because of the weight of the world, remember that He is not surprised by 2026. He isn't pacing the floors of heaven wondering how the Middle East situation will resolve. He is the Alpha and the Omega.
Your walk with Him doesn't have to be perfect, but it does need to be present. If you’ve spent the last week "eating the husks" of fear and anxiety, come back to the Father today. He isn't waiting to scold you for your lack of faith; He’s waiting with a celebration because His child has come home to His peace.
Let’s commit to being a people of the Word, not just a people of the world. Let’s pick up our journals, open our Bibles to Matthew 24, and choose to trust the One who holds the stars in His hands.
