Congregational Pride Shabbat
FRIDAY | JUNE 12 | 6:15 PM

At Temple Sholom, we believe that every person is created b'tzelem Elohim—in the image of God—and that our community is strongest when everyone is able to bring their full selves into Jewish life.

Join us for a special Pride Shabbat led by Or Chadash as we celebrate the LGBTQ+ members of our community and reaffirm our commitment to building a Jewish home rooted in belonging, dignity, and radical welcome. Together, we will welcome Shabbat with music, prayer, and gratitude for the many ways our community is enriched by the diversity of those who call Temple Sholom home.

The service is open to all, and we invite you to stay afterward for a festive Oneg featuring cakes from Jennivee's Bakery. Come celebrate Pride, community, and the sacred work of creating a place where everyone belongs.

🌸✨ What a beautiful evening in bloom! ✨🌸

Last week, Women of Temple Sholom gathered for a colorful Festival of Flowers, where women of all ages learned the art of creating stunning bouquets to take home. Thanks to the floral experts from Mariano's, participants had their pick of a gorgeous assortment of flowers and vases, resulting in creations as unique as the women who made them.

The evening began with Cantor Ben-David sharing reflections on the connection between flowers and Judaism, and continued with lively conversation, new friendships, delicious bites, and plenty of creativity.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this joyful night of beauty, learning, and community. 💐💙

Following the loss of her mother, Batya Ben-David z”l, Cantor Ben-David joins Rabbi Conover, Rabbi Gellman, and Rabbi Antman for a deeply personal conversation about grief, memory, and the ways Jewish ritual can help hold us when life feels unsteady.

Through stories that are both tender and unexpectedly funny, they explore a powerful question: not whether Judaism can protect us from heartbreak, but whether it can help prepare us to carry it.

Grief can make us feel lost. Judaism cannot prevent heartbreak, but it may offer something else: a framework for surviving it.

In this special Beyond the Bimah episode, Rabbi Conover, Cantor Ben-David, Rabbi Gellman, and Rabbi Antman reflect on grief, ritual, and the power of community following the recent loss of Cantor Ben David’s mother, Batya Ben-David z”l. Through stories both tender and unexpectedly funny, they explore whether Judaism functions as an “insurance policy”—not protecting us from pain, but preparing us for it.

Together they examine why Jewish rituals endure: not because they remove grief, but because they help us carry it.

Our hearts are broken by the murders yesterday at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

This is the moment to reach out to our Muslim friends and neighbors. We Jews know this pain and fear all too well. No one should fear for their life at a house of worship.

Our safety is bound up together. Solidarity is not just a value — it is a necessity.

Zichronam livracha — may their memories be a blessing.

An incredible afternoon at Temple Sholom this past Sunday with Sarah Hurwitz for our Distinguished Speaker Series.

With over 400 guests joining us both in person and online, our community came together for a powerful conversation on Jewish identity, antisemitism, storytelling, courage, and what it means to reclaim our narrative in a complicated moment. Sarah brought extraordinary clarity, honesty, intellect, and heart to a discussion that felt both deeply personal and urgently relevant.

As Rabbi Conover reflected during the program, part of our task is to “have courage… look at the problems in the world straight on, and then gain courage to do something about them.” That spirit filled the room. 💙

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Jan and Bruce z”l Tranen for making conversations like this possible through the Temple Sholom Distinguished Speaker Series. ✨
