Devotees of Our Lady of Piat It was brought by Dominican missionaries to Cagayan in 1604 as part of their evangelization efforts to Christianize the valley.

Our Lady of Piat is the revered image of the Blessed Virgin Mary carrying her Child Jesus enshrined in her Basilica in Piat, Cagayan in the northeastern part of the Philippines. Converting the natives was a challenge but beholding Our Lady, they have fallen in love with her image and easily identified with her because of her brown color. Without hesitation, they embraced the new religion and since

then have enshrined her not only in Piat but also in their hearts. She and the infant Jesus are portrayed carrying each in their hands a handkerchief and roses. To the devotees, these are reminders that whoever calls to Her are consoled and comforted: the handkerchief wipe the tears of those who are in sorrow, and the sweat of their hard labor. The roses are symbolic of her love. Her gaze assures anyone who prays that they have a mother always ready to intercede for us to her Son, Jesus. Her Shrine in Piat, Cagayan has been raised to the dignity of a Minor Basilica, a fitting place for the Queen of the Valley. Thousands flock to her, making the place a beloved pilgrimage site in northern Philippines for Yena tam ngamin, a mother to us all.
