SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEKEND SEPT 12-13
Join us for one or both of these dynamic programs:
Saturday 2-4 p.m. – "The Need to Renew, Reconcile and Reboot"
Sunday 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. – "Love Your Immigrant Neighbor Storywalk"
Social Justice is a cornerstone at Renewed Hope UMC. September 12, Rev. James Preston, a leading voice in the protestant movement for LBGT+ inclusion since the 1990s, will lead a thought-provoking discussion on what social justice means in today’s world. “Our commitment to welcome and hospitality must be evident in our acts of social justice and reflected in our day-to-day practice,” says Preston, who has been a significant leader in the reconciling movement since he came to Chicago as outreach coordinator of the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) in 1994. He has served as Lead Pastor of Kingswood United Methodist Church in Buffalo Grove since 2012. “As efforts are made to reduce the full welcome of LBGTQIA people in our culture, the Church must continually push back and call for justice and inclusion in every place possible,” adds Preston. On the same weekend, same corner in Albany Park, Renewed Hope is joining other Methodist congregations throughout Chicago in a day of Faithful Action: Love Your Neighbor on Sunday, September 13. Make time from 11 AM – 1 PM to stand in solidarity and show support for immigrant neighbors at the “Love your immigrant neighbor storywalk.” Read their stories. Leave a message of support. Discover tangible ways to help. Yard signs in English and Spanish will feature stories of immigrants, migrants and refugees, along with statistics about those detained, arrested, deported or harmed. “We believe that living out our faith means partnering in solidarity with those still fighting within broken systems for their God-given dignity,” says Jill Farrar, a member of the Social Action Team (SAT). “Hope cannot be lost when we come together!” A year ago, a neighborhood resources fair was organized by Renewed Hope to help neighbors in the community find ways to support their neighbors. More programming is planned for the upcoming months.
