While Cremation is permitted in the Catholic Church, the scattering of ashes is NOT. Here's why:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC no. 417) states: "The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come." When choosing cremation, the Catholic Church tells us to bury or entomb cremated remains on consecrated grounds. Meet the three men who were ordained priests for Archdiocese of Chicago last weekend.

Cardinal Cupich was to ordain the following men as priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago during a Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on June 20. This issue of Chicago Catholic went to press before the ordination; coverage of the event will be in the July 12 issue.

Much ado was made about Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on May 28 and the gifts he gave to the pontiff — including a Chicago Cubs hat for the famous Chicago White Sox fan.
