Welcome to Augustana! We are a congregation that is deep and wide, and we invite you to come and join this circle of fellowship. Hyde Park is a mix of people, and our congregation reflects that. Jesus called people into a circle of fellowship, not a hierarchy, so everyone is valued here. We realize that this is work that is never finished, so we continue to explore ways in which to welcome everyone into the circle and make sure that everyone can find a place within it. Whether you are a lifelong Lutheran or just beginning to be curious about God and your own spirit, you are welcome here. This is a place where you can bring doubts and questions, and explore them openly. Jesus encountered lots of people with doubts and fears and questions, some of them very hostile, and he was never too busy or impatient to deal with them. Jesus never told people it was wrong to question, even when he urged them to have faith and believe in the power of God. A relationship with God made known in Jesus Christ is something we need no matter where we are in our lives. No matter where you’re at with that relationship, whether it feels close and vital to you, or you haven’t thought about God in a long time, we hope that you’ll consider nurturing it with the worshiping community at Augustana.

First Day of Godly Play

This past Sunday, September 13th, the children of Augustana got to experience the first day of Godly Play — a new spiritual formation program that takes an experiential approach to learning. Godly Play is a program not centered around the classroom, but instead about immersing children experientially in the symbols and stories of the Christian faith.

“It went as well as it possibly could have,” Vicar Adam was happy to report, with the kids being “locked-in” throughout the lesson. (With only a few small, excited interruptions, as is to be expected.)

The Circle of the Church Year was the first topic covered, with children listening to a story and then being invited to engage further with a set of “I wonder” Questions. Such as, “I wonder where you’ve seen these colors before?” and “I wonder which is your favorite color here?” which the kids happily pondered, with answers from everyone over the course of the discussion.

Parents are invited to a little bit of Godly Play themselves this Sunday, September 20th at 9:45am when Pastor Matt will be hosting an orientation of the program and tour of the Atrium.

Going Deeper and Growing Stronger as Followers of Jesus

Whether you’re new to Christian faith or a lifelong Lutheran, Jesus invites us into a lifelong discipline of discipleship: being formed and transformed as the people of God. Starting this fall, Pastor Matt and Vicar Adam will offer Bible studies, theological studies, book studies, and additional opportunities for prayer and worship to deepen our faith and draw connections between faith and daily life. We will meet every Wednesday at 7pm in the Gustavus Adolphus Room for a time of learning and fellowship with one another. If you’re looking for a next step beyond Sunday morning, this is a great place to jump in.

Conscience and Conversation: How Christians Can Disagree Well in the Church (9/9, 9/16)

Finding Joy in All Things: A Study on Paul’s Letter to the Philippians (9/23, 9/30, 10/7), 10/14)

Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace, by Miroslav Volf (10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 11/25)

Advent Vespers: Waiting for the Word (12/2, 12/9, 12/16)
