"The wrestling that Jacob would go on to do and give us our name - maybe that’s what Israel means. To hold on to hope and hold it without passivity. To pray and to act and to live rather than giving up on life… Despite the pain and hardship, we bring blessing into the world only by seeking to add blessing - not removing ourselves from it - even when it is at a great cost."

Listen to David Minkus share some of his reflections and takeaways from his time at the March for Israel in Washington, DC. He made these remarks on Shabbat Toldot, 11/18/23.

Rabbi Minkus shares some reflections on the pain and loss we are experiencing right now. We will be holding space to process and grieve together as a community tomorrow, from 5-6:30pm. We will have food, and we will raise our voices together in song and prayer, led by Cantor Rosenberg. We will also have an opportunity for folks of all ages to interact with therapy dogs. You can RSVP here:

Some members of our community will be participating in this today as a way to unite with our community. If you are interested in gathering online as a larger community for Mincha this evening, please find more information below:
https://www.hadar.org/learn/classes-events/minhah-taanit-tzibbur-day-communal-fasting

We have a traditional practice for moments like this one: ta'anit tzibbur–a fast that draws in the entire community to unite for deliverance for those in crisis.

We stand in horror as Hamas has taken over 100 Israelis and other citizens hostage, among them infants, toddlers, entire families, the elderly and Holocaust survivors. While political and military leaders are pursuing pathways to their release, we have a religious and communal obligation to stand up for the victims and to cry out to God.

Please join us this Thursday, October 12th, the 27th of Tishrei, for a communal fast day supported by rabbis and leaders from across the Jewish world. The fast will begin at dawn and end at nightfall.

For more information and a list of rabbis and community leaders supporting this effort: https://info.hadar.org/taanit-tzibbur
