Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie with some powerful words about the corrosion of Christianity we’ve all been witnessing…

Jesus took sides. He stood with the oppressed and marginalized. He spoke of the need for both individuals and nations to seek justice. Today, too many Christians, particularly white evangelicals, set aside Jesus’ teachings. They embrace radical individualism and the acquisition of power and wealth over the ideal of the Beloved Community. The MAGA agenda they advocate is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Sign of the times, unfortunately…

Americans’ religious views have fractured along political lines—and it's a threat to our democracy. https://trib.al/KsuBxla

The loss of middle spaces for Americans to meet across political and religious continuums is a serious problem that harms our civil society and our religious communities.

Conservatives used to have to sit alongside progressives. The wealthy would come into contact with people less fortunate. Now, there’s not much “middle” left.

Progressive Christians certainly do still exist in this country, but their political kin are far more likely to be religiously unaffiliated. And while it might be hard to find a left-leaning believer in many evangelical churches, it may be *even harder* to find an atheist who voted for Trump or an agnostic who favors more strict abortion restrictions.

And so, religion (or nonreligion) becomes a sort of tribal marker that reflects political leaning and preserves boundaries against those with whom we disagree.

These pieces calling out MAGA Christians are getting more and more common these days…

The Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals aligning with ICE are “prying Christianity further and further away from the ethic and teachings of Jesus,” Peter Wehner argues. https://theatln.tc/qQHxnw3y

The federal government has released multiple recruitment videos featuring scripture verses. “What’s striking is less that the federal government is using Bible verses in its promotional videos than that the agency doing the recruiting is Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Wehner argues. “The message the Trump administration is sending is not subtle: ICE is doing the work of God. The brutal and sometimes lethal tactics being used by a growing number of ICE agents are divinely sanctioned. Come join this holy campaign.”

This isn’t the first time in history such a thing has happened: In the 1920s, a movement emerged within the German Evangelical Church that supported Adolf Hi**er. The Deutsche Christen—or “German Christians”—promoted the idea of a “heroic” Jesus, even an A***n Jesus, who fought against the Jewish influence in German life. They were encouraged by the anti-Semitic writings of Martin Luther. “America in 2026 is not Germany in 1936; far from it. But we would be mistaken to pretend that political movements that aren’t as malevolent as Na**sm can’t still advance sinister ends,” Wehner writes.

“Huge numbers of American fundamentalists and evangelicals—not just cultural Christians, but also those who faithfully attend church and Bible-study sessions and prayer gatherings—prefer the MAGA Jesus to the real Jesus. Few of them would say so explicitly, though, because the cognitive dissonance would be too unsettling,” Wehner writes. “It’s rather remarkable, really, to see tens of millions of Christians validate, to themselves and to one another, a political movement led by a malignant narcissist—who is driven by hate and bent on revenge, who mocks the dead, and who delights in inflicting pain on the powerless.”

I’ve witnessed the audacity of their hypocrisy for a decade now, and it’s nice to see that many others are finally calling them out now too..

This framework reveals why some MAGA-aligned Christians act in ways that contradict Jesus’ teachings.
