Ignatian Spirituality Project

Ignatian Spirituality Project Founded in 1998 in Chicago by Fr.

The Ignatian Spirituality Project invites people recovering from homelessness and addiction to experience God's love, hope and healing through spiritual companionship that transforms lives. Bill Creed, SJ, and Ed Shurna (then-Executive Director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless), the Ignatian Spirituality Project (ISP) is a Jesuit ministry which invites people recovering from homelessness

and addiction to encounter God’s love, hope and healing through spiritual companionship that transforms lives. To achieve this mission, ISP has created a successful program model, including overnight retreats, follow up Days of Reflection, and ongoing accompaniment programs that care for the interior and spiritual lives of our target population. Retreats were originally offered to men and women in the Chicago area; over time ISP has become a network of 28 cities across the United States, Canada, and Ireland. As the only organization of its kind to offer Ignatian retreats to those on the margins, ISP plays a unique role in the continuum of care for men and women recovering from homelessness and addiction. Through a seamless blend of Ignatian and 12-step recovery spirituality, ISP’s retreat programs foster a spark of hope and possibility for change. Strengthened spiritual and community connections help participants rediscover their inherent worth and dignity, empowering them to strive to reach goals and access services to move them out of poverty. Our lean Network office headquartered in Chicago employs 8 full-time and 2 part-time staff members; 4 full-time Regional Directors support the over 700 volunteers in execution of the program and development of ongoing training and formation for all volunteers, particularly retreat alumni. Our success over the past 20+ years demonstrates that hope and healing experienced on our retreats leads to the empowerment of participants to access further and longer-lasting transformation, including housing stability, ongoing sobriety, and increase in education and job attainment.

A week on, and we're still thinking about Company of Grace 2026: Kindle the Fire. πŸ”₯

Last Thursday, the ISP community came together at Ignite Glass Studios in Chicago, at watch parties in Houston, Atlanta, and San Diego, and on the livestream from living rooms across the country. We gathered for a fireside conversation about what it means to find your way home, and a few of the lines from that evening haven't left us yet.

Reggie Morrow, an Ambassador of Hope from ISP Chicago, talked about his first ISP retreat in 2022, six months into recovery, and what shifted for him there: "All we have to do is look up, and we can get up."

Lisa Wilson, an Ambassador of Hope from ISP Detroit, retold the cracked-pot story she'd heard at her own first retreat β€” about a clay pot whose broken side watered the flowers along the path: "We may have fallen, but we can get back up. And with our imperfections, we can water some flowers."

Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ, closed the fireside drawing on Mother Teresa: "We're here on this earth to walk each other home."

And together we met our goal and raised over $130,000 to support retreats and reflection circles for people rebuilding their lives across the country.

We're SO grateful for everyone who showed up to make that possible!

"We may have fallen, but we can get back up. And with our imperfections, we can water some flowers."
β€” Lisa Wilson, Ambassador of Hope, ISP Detroit

That was Lisa during last night's fireside at Company of Grace 2026: Kindle the Fire β€” one of many moments from an evening the whole ISP community carried together.

From the fireside conversation between Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ (Pope Francis Center), and Christine Haley (Illinois' first chief homelessness officer), to the reflections of our Ambassadors of Hope, Reggie Morrow and Lisa Wilson, we're so glad you joined us to celebrate the spark that makes a new life feel possible!

We also honored Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center Atlanta with the 2026 Company of Grace Award: 15 years of ISP retreats rooted in one community. Long enough for alumni to find work again, reconcile with family, and rebuild whole lives.

ONE WEEK from Thursday β€” Company of Grace 2026 is almost here, and you can still be part of it from wherever you are!

The evening is a fireside conversation with Fr. Tim McCabe, S.J. (Pope Francis Center) and Christine Haley (Illinois' first Chief Homelessness Officer), joined by ISP's Ambassadors of Hope β€” alumni and leaders whose lived experience shapes this work. Together, they'll talk about what makes recovery last: the importance of tending to the whole person, body and spirit, in recovery.

But the evening is more than a conversation. It's flames coming together across the country, in Chicago and at home from coast to coast. A celebration of spiritual companionship, and a reminder that no one carries a flame alone. πŸ”₯ We'll also honor Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center (ISP Atlanta) with the 2026 Company of Grace Award.

Livestream is free. Register and we'll see you April 23 at 7 p.m. CT.

And if you registered early enough, keep an eye on your mailbox. Your party pack is on the way.

Over 100 walkers. One mission. ISP joined The Winter Walk in Boston for the first time on Sunday β€” and Boston's Ignatian and Jesuit community showed up!

Our tent on the Common became the gathering point: students, parishioners, retreat house staff, alumni, and families all finding each other and walking the same two-mile loop for the same reason. As our executive director Christine Curran put it: "We talk about the Ignatian family all the time, but on Sunday you could actually see it."

"The dedication, commitment, and compassion displayed on the Common confirms my belief in, and hope for, the work of ISP in Boston," said ISP alum and Ambassador of Hope Glenn Haff.
First year. Already can't wait for next year. Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, and showed up for their neighbors!

What happens when recovery programs treat the body but never touch the spirit?

Reggie in Chicago and Lisa in Detroit both know. They lived it β€” years of cycling through programs that never reached what's underneath. And they found what was missing.

Reggie: "My spirit was sick and needed to be healed. I didn't know how, and I didn't know how to reach the resources that would heal it."

Lisa: "I realized I matter, I have worth, and I don't need a substance to feel connection."

Today, both are ISP Ambassadors of Hope β€” leaders with lived experience who walk with others through the same spiritual practices that transformed their own lives.

On April 23, they join Christine Haley (Illinois' Chief Homelessness Officer) and Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ, for a fireside conversation about what happens when recovery goes deeper.
