Sometimes our willingness to sacrifice includes an unspoken expectation that we have. We can expect our faithfulness to be met with approval from others. However, we see throughout the Bible that sacrifice is often misunderstood. Jesus even tells us that we can expect rejection because he himself was rejected. We must remain faithful even as our sacrifice is misunderstood.

Paul’s love for Jesus, his mission, and the church is seen in his willingness to be patient and flexible with other believers. Paul was willing compromise his comfort and freedom in things that he saw as nonessential to the Christian faith if his sacrifice allowed for unity or the advancement of the gospel.

The biblical principle is that we gain by losing. When we want to see God move the question we must ask is: What am I willing to lose in order to gain this in Christ?

Paul’s willingness to suffer is anchored in his allegiance to Jesus. He is neither running from pain, nor eager to suffer. He knows the One he serves, and what that service may require of him.

Spiritual maturity, not only knows how to walk in freedom, it also asks, “What am I willing to give up for someone else’s good?”

Why is Paul willing to suffer for the Gospel even if it costs his life? Because he feels that what is gained is worth it. We are often willing to suffer for something that we feel is worth it.
