Today, the Episcopal Church celebrates the feast day of Frances Perkins, Public Servant and Prophetic Witness.
Perkins was the first woman ever appointed to a U.S. Cabinet position, and served as FDR's Secretary of Labor for twelve years. Some of the major accomplishments during her tenure include the Social Security Act, the 40-hour work week, and federal labor protections that transformed American life.
Her faith was the foundation of everything. Perkins was drawn to the Episcopal Church while living in Lake Forest and Chicago, and she was confirmed at The Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, on June 11, 1905— the same day the building was consecrated! The church and her belief in the need to make the Kingdom of God in this world would be a source of strength and commitment throughout her life.
