The Lord Jesus commanded his disciples to care for the sick, to lay hands upon them, to pray and to bless them in His name. Since that time, many saints and disciples have undertaken this mission. When St. Peregrine was granted a miraculous cure of his leg, people began to invoke him as an intercessor to the Lord to grant them healing also. On this Labor Day, when rest from our work, we pray to the Risen Lord for health of mind, body, and soul. Let us be aware of the intercessory presence of St. Peregrine today and in our lives and work throughout the week.

O Lord our God, in your divine plan you sent your Son, Jesus, into the world to bear our sorrows and infirmities and to bring us fullness of life. Look with love upon all your children who are in pain and in need of hope and healing. Through the intercession of St. Peregrine, humble Servant of Mary, send them your Spirit of consolation healing and peace. May they be held firmly in your hand and able to offer again generous witness and joyful service at home and in the Church. And may we all come to accept your holy will. This we ask through Christ, our healer and our Lord. Amen.

St. Peregrine, pray for us.

With so much suffering in the world around us, the image of the Sorrowful Mother powerfully relevant. The Blessed Mother, under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows, is also the Patroness of the Servite Order. The image and example of Mary at the Foot of the Cross providing a sense of presence, comfort and compassion to those who suffer has been central to Servite ministry for centuries.

If you or loved ones are currently experiencing troubles and the trials of life, please join us in the prayers of the Novena starting today, September 6, culminating with the Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. We invite you to reflect on the Mother who shared in the sufferings of her Son as well as how your own sufferings are reflected in the suffering of Christ. Please send us your prayer intentions which will be placed before the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows in the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, Chicago.

Looking to the example of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, may we too unite our sufferings to the Lord, facing them with courage, love, acceptance, and trust. In the words of Mary, “Let it be done to me according to Thy word.”

Jesus said to his disciples, “In truth I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. In truth I tell you once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.” (Mt 18:18-20)

God our Father, you redeem us, you heal us, and you make us your children in Christ. Look upon us, give us true freedom and bring us to the inheritance you promised. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

"I wrote 12 letters to my friend who is battling cancer today—one to open on the day of each of her 12 chemotherapy treatments. Before her first treatment, I bundled the handwritten letters, wrapped them with a pretty ribbon, and took them to her. I hope, by sharing this, you too will be able to encourage a friend battling cancer..."

St. Peregrine, pray for us.

Being diagnosed with cancer can be a terrifying experience! It can bring about so many negative thoughts, like fear of the unknown and physical pain, as well as mental stress. If you have a friend with cancer, as I do, you may not know how to help them. I

All afflictions receive a blessing when people show togetherness in joy or in sorrow. Love that is shared, communion in prayer, and acts of compassion are all blessings. When St. Peregrine was sick, the townspeople rallied around; when he was cured, they flocked to the priory. That affection and spiritual closeness remains to this day. Together in prayer, we are in special union with people who are suffering in body or soul, especially those who are victims of current natural disasters and storms, and we make confident prayer to the Lord of all life to send comforting strength and healing through the intercession of St. Peregrine.

I called on the name of the Lord: “Deliver my soul, O Lord.”
- I called on the name of the Lord: “Deliver my soul, O Lord.”
Return, O my soul, to your rest.
- “Deliver my soul, O Lord.”
Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
- I called on the name of the Lord: “Deliver my soul, O Lord.”

Peregrine, brother and friend, faithful Servant of the Sorrowful Mother and holy Saint in the Church of God, listen kindly to our plea. You who were patient and strong in suffering, help our sick friends to carry with humility to cross of illness. You who were miraculously healed by the hand of Christ, pray to the Lord for all the sick, that they may regain strength and health and find serenity and peace. Receive, St. Peregrine, Patron of the sick, our praise and petition, you who live in the light of the Father, Son, and Spirit, to whom all glory and honor is owed forever and ever. Amen.

"We all can benefit from giving back, from volunteering, even if we have health problems. Studies show that volunteers live longer and have higher functional ability, lower rates of depression, and less incidence of heart disease..."

St. Peregrine, pray for us.

We all can benefit from giving back, from volunteering, even if we have health problems. Connecting with others brings hope into our lives.

O good St. Peregrine, as a humble Servant of Mary, you experienced human weakness and the pain and suffering of sickness. Knowing that medicine and human knowledge have limits, we pray with you for all those involved with the medical profession that they will be a true source of healing and comfort to all people. And like you, we also turn to God in our suffering. Just as Jesus reached out and touched you with His healing hand, we pray that the following sick person(s) will be strengthened in body and spirit and cured of their illness by Jesus Christ through your intercession:

(Here mention the name(s) of your sick relatives and friends - and also write them in the comments so that we and others might also offer prayers for them)

In gratitude, we pray for all the people of the world that they will come to know you, St. Peregrine, and the love that God has for each of them. Amen.

"Spontaneous prayers are short, effective, “easy to remember” vehicles for grace in daily life. As immediate conduits of grace, they help us manage fear and anxiety more quickly and successfully by inviting the Lord into our suffering..."

St. Peregrine, pray for us.
